Tobago fishing...

I am currently at Gatwick Airport in a hotel waiting to fly to Tobago tomorrow...I have 2 spinning rods, a fly rod and a beach rod with me....(and my case with all my reels and lures is still smaller than my girfriend's!)

So I will not be on here for a week, or if the wifi works I will hopefully be posting pictures of lots of monster fish...

Enjoy the cold weather chaps....

Well I'm out here in tobago, it's really lovely and the little fishing village we are staying in is a lovely friendly place. Sadly the fishing is not going as we'll as I had hoped as there is a really big surf running. The locals have told me it is too rough but I have tried spinning and bait fishing with squid. Had one bite on squid but missed it, maybe it was the circle hooks or may just something tiny.

Just walked up the waterfall close the the village and swam in the pool there which was teeming with fish, mostly some sort of mullet up to about 8" long.

I have a boat booked to take me out to some fish, so hopefully will come back with plenty. Tomorrow we will be on the flats casting live crabs hopefully for my first bonefish or permit, then Sunday we will be trolling lures for tuna, kingfish, wahoo and barracuda.

I am hoping that the surf calms down tomorrow so I can catch from the shore as well. We are off to pigeon point and I will (optimistically) take the fly rod and a spinning rod to see what I can get there early next week.

Well the mrs and I have been out today with Kester Herbert...walking the flats casting crab for the permit and bonefish.

What a frustrating experience!!!!

Permit are my new nemesis! We walked around all morning casting to them and the bones and they just took the Micky turning away at the last minute...

We then tried fishing for them from the boat as the tide had turned, we only saw then once we had chucked all our bait and were about to move!

We then fished in the lagoon against the mangroves with live bait - I lost a couple of barracuda and my mrs lost a tarpon which jumped and threw the hooks.

So no fish landed but we were so impressed with how much effort Kester put in to get a fish and the fact we were out for nearly six hours when had paid for four we haved booked him again for a whole day tomorrow from 5am - I am determined to get me a tarpon and a bone fish tomorrow....apparently we are going where the big tarpon live in the morning then we will chase the permit around the flats again the the afternoon - hopefully will have some photos to post tomorrow!

Well today was even better than yesterday....

4am start saw us with live baits out for tarpon behind the boat by 6am...very quickly I had an estimated 40lb very angry airbourne tarpon on my rather too light travel spinning rod...two spectacular leaps and he throws the hooks. Much swearing from me....

Then I didn't get another touch all morning, the mrs however had an African pompardo which although small fought its little heart out and is about to meet the BBQ, a barracuda, a kingfish and a jack!

We then had a break for lunch before moving over to some different flats past the airport....

Wading into the wind with the intention of then finding the fish on the way back to the boat casting downwind we spotted a group of permit (the fish I most wanted to catch) I managed to in a panic fumble my cast into the right spot and a permit grabbed it, then unleashed acceleration from a fish like I have never ever experienced....taking a lot of line in a very short time, bearing in mind we are stood in 8" of water. Not a huge fish but I have caught my first permit, some guys spend years chasing the so I am very lucky to have caught on in two days....

Mrs then caught her first bonefish which went like stink, about 3 1/2lbs....soon after I managed one of the same size....target species two sorted. She then went on to take the Micheal by landing a stunning 5lb fish after a right tussle with it - she is now addicted to bonefish.

The tide turned and the fish evaporated, but was a very happy fisherman...(if a little miffed that my complete novice mrs completely out fished me).

We then trolled live baits back to mooring and just to rub salt in my wounds, the instant the mrs' bait hit the water she hooked up another nice barracuda. Not to be outdone I then managed a similar sized Cuda which gave a good scrap on my light gear.

So overall a brilliant day, not huge numbers of fish but the species I really wanted. A nice tarpon would have been the icing on the cake but that will have to wait until next year...

A few pics from mrs' phone, proper pics are on camera so will have to wait until we are back in the uk.

  • 2 weeks later...

Rich...

If you notice, Anthony's hands in the photoes...that they look like boiled prawns colour....don't forget the factor 50 sun protection cream.....like Anthony did....LOL

Yes, my hands got burnt fishing as I didn't want to taint the bait with sun cream and it was 36C and blazing sun! It was worth the discomfort.
