lewis2012
Variation has been approved as FEO called me today to confirm also stated will be posted o to me today so now looking for a 223 for charlie and long range vermin. I've been looking at Browning a bolt, remi 700, also howa 1500 to name a few. The local store has a Remi 700 sps fired around 50 rounds from new, was purchased a few weeks ago new from same store then sold back, nikko sterling diamond 3-12x56 scope, wildcat mod £600 all in. What does everyone think of the remi 700? I'm probs going to spend around £600 on a 2nd hand setup but just trying to get a feel of different peoples experiences with different manufacturers. I did have a look at browning x-bolt stainless stalker! Lovely gun but don't need it for charlie, I already have a CZ452 in hmr so fancy something different. Cheers all Lewis Edited February 27, 2013 by lewis2012
Marty J
I'd go for the Howa.

Thedeerman
The Remington 700 is like marmite, personally I hate them. Look for a second hand browning or tikka or get a new howa.
pat g
Hi i have a Howa 1500, abeit in 243 and tbh they are cracking value for money. Have a look at the Weatherby Vangaurd which is the same rifle as the Howa and built by Howa if i'm correct and also a bit cheaper. If you must have new these rifles would fall into your budget but remember you would still have a scope and mod to buy. So you might be better looking at a used package. There are some good buys about and in 223 you will have plenty of choice on the used market so don't just buy the first rifle you come across. Have a look on. guntrader, plenty 223's on there. Good luck with your choice ATB, Pat

Cheers all Lewis A tidy Sako Vixen s/h or a 75 or maybee a Brno / cz. Depends on what you want to spend, there are lots about that have spent much of their lives kept prisoner in someones safe. The reasoning is they are all dedicated small actions and made of real metal not plastic Edited February 27, 2013 by kent
Redgum
The remington 700sps can be hit or miss, quality isnt what it used to be, I had one in 243 and it shot well once I had binned the stock and fitted a Timney trigger. It would have been cheaper to have bought a Tikka in the end, plus the Tikka would have been more accurate, now have Tikkas in 243 and 308. If the rifle is back in the shop already then its probably not a good sign. 15years ago it would have been 700 all the way but times change. njc110381
I too would question why it's been brought back so soon? A-Bolt's are good. You can get a new one for very little money.

A couple of different boxes of rounds, an hour to zero in and off you go.....!! TEH Indeed as an ex 700 owner I couldn't fault mine, though it had had the trigger done and new stock before I bought it. At that price the rifle is costing you under £300 so a billy bargain. The 700 gets lots of flack due to internet rumours but speak to those who have actually had one and the opinions are different. Mine I only sold as I had a .243 and a mate who wanted it, watching him shoot a half inch group the day it went I really realised I should have probably kept it. One of the perks with them is there are so many after market parts available so if you want to swap bits its as cheap as you like.
bullet boy
All I can say is I love my Tikka T3 and would recommend this rifle to anyone. It is a brilliant rifle IMO. ATVB in whatever you choose.

keeper1984
I have a savage axis and weaver 3-12x50 scope and ase sl5 mod and bipod. Fantastic rifle shot 3 inch 5 shot group at 300 yards. Beware though it is ammo fussy. Likes either 69gn match king or 40gn hornady ballistic tip
Kes
I have a Remington 700 laminate varmint and it is very accurate with a developed load which I inherited from the previous owner. The full kit cost £600 and anything else was loads more expensive. I would ask for a trial shot or two - shop owners tend to shoot and he should be able to arrange this. If he cant or wont and cant adequately explain why the gun was returned, I'd try a tikka which was my first choice until I found the Remington. Personally the floor plate mechanism is a pain and the varmint barrel is very heavy and unnecessary for normal shooting. I'd say anything in .223 will shoot foxes all day long at up to 200yds (i've shot them at over this distance occassionally). Its not a life changing decision so if doesnt 'feel right' look for another. Good luck.
bullet boy
Personally I preferred the Tikka over the Howa cos the cycling of the bolt is by far smoother than the Howa!
tikka.223
Tikka T3 or CZ527.
