rent an acre

Recommended Posts

I've asked at the farm tonight if it would be feasable to rent an acre to sow our own game crop for this coming season.

It would be a long thin strip at the side of a field of wheat.

Any idea what we should expect to pay if we get the nod??

Thanks

Think it depends on the crop or the type of wheat I have been quoted 700 pa at current prices for next year, this is based on the farmers current price hes getting of 250 per ton and sowing and seed costs for the cover. On the plus side we get two woods and duck shooting for free which is handy as this is are first year.

Lots of things to consider.

Will the land have to be taken out of his particular SFP scheme, it depends on the level he's in.

What rents are in your area.

Will it be an inconvenience to the farm.

Round here grazing is £80/acre.

Land for game crops is upwards of £1500/acre.

Yep and whilst you can strip out the costs of production to calculate the profit he is losing from not growing wheat, you have to add fair bit of it back in for seed, cultivating, spray to get a stale seed bed, drilling of the game cover.

That said, choose a suitable mix, and he should be able to use it as wild bird cover, and may be able to get something back from a stewardship scheme. Depends how much he wants to help you.

yup like teal says we have a farmer who puts 2ach in for free as he gets paid for it, and he made 2 ponds for us

all depends. Probably anywhere from 100-400 quid. If it is grade 1 land that he could have a good crop of wheat from then it will be more. But if it is on corner that can square his field off for him and is bad land then it wont be a lot, all depends..

do keeping on a small shoot in north yorkshire , we pay £3 per acre to hold shooting rights and roughly about £200 per acre of arable land taken for game cover, but should always expect price to vary slightly depending on the site of the ground to be taken up. eg. on edge of wood where crop might not usually produce aswell could be cheaper thana plot on fertile south facing field.

Thanks chaps, I was surprised at some of the quotes but it all makes perfect sense when I think about it.

After discussing it with the farm, they are willing to locate their own bird cover to suit us, and hopefully use a better suited seed.
