ozzy518
I had a Honda trx 420 and it just about went into the back of the van I had, a swb Ford Transit low roof. I had a pair of aluminium ramps to drive the quad in but had to lean forward over the tank . You will need something with a side door to get out. I miss the quad but it got to be a pain driving to a farm unloading quad only to drive round then when nothing there load it back up and onto the next farm. Much easier now , just drive the defender to where I need to be.
theosmith
Im just fed up with cost of fuel for such a small car so getting the quad out wouldbe fine
ozzy518
Though most vans will look like they will take a quad you have to measure between the inside wheel arches in the back of the van. I'd love to have kept my quad, cost nothing to run, went anywhere and was really good fun to ride. It's too easy though to go silly and hurt yourself on one
Fib new
In the past we had Suzuki supercarry or rascal.... Had a 350cc kawa quad, and this would fit in the back. Worked for us when we went lamping...
sitsinhedges
I keep wondering if I could manage with a small trials bike with panniers etc and whether one would fit into my Berlingo van?
HDAV
What about off road trike? Front wheel between arches, rears up to them, berlingo/transit connect would work... Or small trailer my aunt had a trailer that was designed to be road legal and fit a quad on it, the quad could also tow the trailer used to use it for delivering large round bales of feed to her horses. Unbraked trailer low sides and a ramp tail gate it was spot on for the job. Its like this one http://www.wilstow-trailers.co.uk/wilstow-ng272p-single-mesh-atv-quad-bike-trailer-468-p.asp very tidy bit of kit for the money Edited April 7, 2013 by HDAV
theosmith
Unfortunately i live in a flat ! So the van will double up as an garage for quad too....during the week i can leave it at my work yard but over the weekend it can live in the van. I have seen some very nice trikes but were 2stroke toys if thats the right saying and need something 4stroke and ideally 4wd auto or manual doesnt need to be road legal either but can easily agri register one as work on farm premises
HDAV
Well http://www.kikquads.co.uk/Shop/tabid/311/CategoryID/45/List/1/Level/a/ProductID/100/Default.aspx Width 1172mm Need a van with mor ethan 1200mm between the arches then! Transit connect has 1226mm between arches......New Kangoo 1218mm
ozzy518
I seriously doubt that you will fit a Honda 420 in a Connect. As well as being impossibly narrow there will not be enough headroom to get the thing on and off easily. I wouldn't attempt it with anything smaller than swb transit. Make sure it also has a solid bulkhead , not only to stop you from being crushed by the quad if you brake sharply but also to prevent TGB's from seeing what's in the back
theosmith
I can make a ramp to go over the arches with a winc attcached and bolt bike down! I think the old kango maybe a tad short but the connect might just do the job,,,, plus the width is not so silly that i can still drive one of my golf courses in the van.......time to find me a van to swap my jimny i think

I wouldn't go over the arches (top heavy) couple of channel ramps and you can slide them under the quad... http://www.quadbikeswales.co.uk/folding-aluminium-ramp-quad-motorcycle-mower.html?___store=default&___store=default £90 a pair. However: Decent connect £3-5k used Decent Quad £3k used your spending £6k to save what £50 a week in petrol? http://vans.autotrader.co.uk/used-vans/ford/transit-connect/2004-ford-tran-connect-lx-tdci-lwb-lwb-high-top-90000-miles-diesel-smethwick-vfpa-8a788d133d5d9c13013d69d5adf75302/makemodel/make/ford/model/transit-connect/wheelbasetype/lwb http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-TRX-350-ES-2003-FARM-AGRI-QUAD-ATV-4-X-4-FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE-BIG-RED-FOREMAN-/130854238681?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D6802571654851125997%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D140937019655%26 Edited April 7, 2013 by HDAV
ozzy518
And not to forget you will be burning more fuel than the advertised mpg as you will be carrying a large lump of quad in the back. They ain't light
houlsby
Connects are **** on fuel too. My work ones doing 36mpg over avg and there's no room in the back for a quad. Buy an l200, mines doing 30 ish mpg! (Runs on veg oil too, 56 quid for 60l!!!)
HDAV
Or just buy 4x4 mini van like the daihatsu hijet, I recon a quad would go in aconnect, (not riden in but winched) not much else tho, at 400kg not far off a full load either combo, berlingo, partner would all be similarly snug once into transit/vivaro size vans your bit going to save a huge amount in fuel. Alright if you have the van already but alot of outlay to save on petrol....... For the combined cost of van + quad you would get a reasonable pick up ( especially a single cab) and have as many seats as the van...... Blackbart
Ask your nearest travelling person.. I am sure they will know exactly how big a van you need to fit a quad inside
four-wheel-drive
I cannot see that you are going to be making a big saving driving the van with a big quad and your other stuff in it is not going to be good on fuel then if people see that you have the quad in the van one night I can see the quad going to a new home leaving you with no way of going across the fields. theosmith
Ic an see what you guys are saying, i have a massive work yard but i know full well the quad will go walkies then i will have to replace the work doors which wont be cheap. In this case can any one think of a more economical 4x4 than a jimny or bigger with same mpg and more power and speed
new shot
Hi, If you look on ebay there are several lpg vans which would be cheap to run..Or failing that lpg 4x4? jeeps.vitara etc...cheap to buy as they are petrol engine but when on lpg they are pretty cheap to run..We used to have a 02 land cruiser amazon which was 4.7 petrol but when converted to gas was a lot cheaper to run..well worth a look for another 4x4 instead of van and quad [which some ***** will only try and steal]..what about a dhatsu small jeep 1.3 petrol.. HDAV
Terios perhaps but how bad is the jimny? is it your daily drive? off road you want good tyres with deep treads, rubbish for fuel, driving slowly round fields rubbish for fuel. IF your getting under 20 mpg get a range rover..............
theosmith
With my mud tyres combining road and shooting im getting 180 miles.....32litres which is 7 gallons so 25.7mpg sometimes less. With normal road tyres again road use and shooting 200miles so about 29mpg So its no good on fuel i poodle it everywhere, i do 13miles aday on road for work 5days a week the rest goes on shooting and im filling it up once a week Admitidly its better than what my disco was but comparing it to my audi a4 its just killing me Forgot to say this is my proper day to day car, perhaps it needs an lpg conversion but doesnt help being so slow and small
al4x
The issue you have is spending money to save some, by the time you've bought a van and a quad you could have bought a lot of petrol for your existing car. Bear in mind if you save 10mpg the actual saving will probably take years to pay for itself, before the quad goes walkies
new shot
Cant you agri reg a 4x4? Then run it on red..
al4x
Only if you only drive 1.6 km or so on the road, but won't help much on a petrol jimney
HDAV
Disconnect the rear prop Monday to Friday and put road tyres on it.......
