Newbie saying "Hi"... and help?

Hi to all. Hope this is the right place to introduce myself.

I hadn't shot anything, apart from an air rifle, for about 20 years. I used to be in a cadet force as a cicvilian instructor and was qualified to take cadets on the local TA indoor firing range - that was a while back. Whilst a cadet I got an RAF marksman at Purfleet on a .303

When a friend at work invited a group of us to go clay pigeon shooting, I jumped at the chance. It's quite different, but I've got the bug and have applied for my shotgun licence.

The thing is..... I don't know that it will be granted. About 14 years ago I had a minor breakdown due to financial difficulties during a difficult divorce. My FEO says so long as it isn't recent, and considering the circumstances, etc, no problem.

So, if all goes well, a cabinet and a Lanber Sporting Deluxe will make nice Christmas'ish prezzies (in the case of the gun, very "ish"!).

Considering the circumstances, would it be wise to wait for the FEO to ring before I buy a cabinet (if accepted), and then ask about siting it (I could use the loft, or I have a little hobby room I build model aicraft in but the walls are those grey blocks, not red brick - will studding and gripfill be OK?)?

Also, are the Infac B4 gun safes any good? They have one 'butterfly' shaped key (levers on both sides), and slide bars across much like a safe. The guy at Ladds said that the police forces approve them, but they are not BS approved.

Sorry for the long post - Hi, and thanks for any help.

Steve

Hi DD,

Welcome and enjoy!!

In the case of the cabinet, best to wait until the FEO has given approval, otherwise £100ish down the drain. The "incident" 14 years ago shouldn't be too much of a hassle, fingers crossed for you on that one. Each County varies on the cabinet question (and the length of time you get approved) , so ask the FEO once he approves you and that way you can't go wrong. Not sure about the STud/ plaster, breezeblock combo, but again ask and that way if he says yes, it saves having to go up and down in the loft like I have to.

All the best.

Yep, Ladds of Crediton.

This is the safe I am curious about...

As for the wall fixing, it's Sugg's sugestion here.. (see, I've been looking at these forums a while!)

http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...&hl=cabinet

I used to work for a security equipment installers - they fitted those detectors at the store exits. Basically they are held with 4 studs that are 'glued' into drilled holes in the floor, and once set, don't move anywhere!

My FEO says that the trouble with lofts are that people get lazy if the access is too awkward. And then there's the problem of humidity/damp, not only for the gun(s) but the fixings themselves.

The police website says 8 -10 weeks for the certificate although I was in a local gun shop and a customer said his was granted in about 3 weeks; mine will take longer - I'll expect they'll check fully with my GP first.

Thanks for the replies and welcomes.

Ladds are a bit on the pricey side, have you looked in Mole Avon at gun safes?, they stock a few!

I use heavitree gun and sport, Neil Chard  , knows his stuff and always has time for you, especially when you are starting out!

Good luck with the application, D & C Constabulary dont mess around, they are fairly on the ball with licenses and shouldnt take to long.

Will you be busting clays at Uton ?,

D & C.... Devon & Cornwall?

I don't know, I just saw the add in a mag, and I know from guys at work that Ladds is a recognised retailer, and was thinking mail order for the safe. Still, I'll look at the other suggetions - cheers.

I don't know where Uton is. I live in Essex - my friend lives in St ALbans, so have gone to Bloomhills Shooting Ground up till now, though (if all goes OK) will be looking for grounds in Essex or possibly Kent (I think there's one near the Dartford crossing).

Welcome to the forum buddy. I'd stick with a BS rated safe, that way, you know it isn't going to cause any problems. As for the breakdown, it was a long time ago and as you say, you were under a lot of pressure at the time. I should think you will be ok as long as you didn't do anything really daft. I've just got my cert through after two months, and I have a conviction for posession of an explosive from seven years ago  They are much more interested in how you are now than what you have done in the past, as long as it's nothing really major. Good luck with it, and steer clear of soft block walls if you can!

Tam, thanks for the PM, will ring later - at work at the moment (night shift).

All the Brattonsound safes I've seen top £100 just for 2/3 guns. Still, elsewhere in these forums DJS products were menntioned - may give them a ring too.

Thanks for all your welcomes. I must admit when I had my 'problems', I was in hospital for just under two days - they let me out again when I started beating the nurses at Trivial Pursuit!

An Angus wanna be as well eh? I too have an SG that manages to sing out some sweet tones. I also have a USA Standard Tele in Tobbaco that i've hotrailed and tapped with an armstong. Sitting in the cupboard I also have an original Fender Katana with Fender floating Trem and Jackson Stealth EX that needs a refret.

Its good to find another like minded gent on forum.
