Markio
Morning, I'm currently with Freedom 2 Surf who have been decent enough in the last year or so. I moved house in the summer and i'm much further away from my local exchange. I won't go into all the details but the service hasn't been great during the move over and the despite BT replacing the wiring from the pole outside right into and including a new master socket i'm still getting frequent connection loss. After carious test with the test socket on the master socket i simply believe i'm too far away from the local exchange. What i'm after is an alternative way of sourcing my broadband, i've tried SKY (dish for download and local exchange for upload i'm led to believe) but they aren't running it in my area for a some time to come. My brother in law had a similar problem with his 512k line, disconnects, BT were no good to him so he tried Bulldog and although he's on 512k still his connection problems are sorted. I've tried them and they think i'm too far away from the exchange too! Any alternative methods then fellas? Your thoughts would be much appreciated! pin
PM me your house number, postcode and BT telephone number, I will do some digging for you. If you don't want to, that's fine too Might not work on your exchange, but try this :- Unplug everything but one phone, have that in the master socket. Dial 17070 then press option 3 (fast test) then press option 1 ( ) then press option 2 (ring back test). Then put the phone down. It will call you back in about 10 seconds, and will tell you the distance from the exchange in km.

pin
If you have been MAX enabled on that exchange it should make a massive difference if you have variable line quality or you are >2km from the exchange. Again with the required info I can find out for you.
Highlander
Haven’t we been here before??? If like me you live in the countryside then despite all the wonderful ads on TV etc about your only option is BT, even if using some other provider your still gonna be on BT lines and here’s the rub…BT are selling the latest technology but without the hardware capability to actually provide it in many areas. Kinda what I’d call a con trick in plain English! Where I am we’re a good distance from the exchange and at the end of the line BUT the real problem is the lines are so ****** old i.e. copper and aluminium if you can believe it, that they are simply incapable of functioning properly. Laws of commerce come into play here, it’s simply never gonna be viable for BT or anyone else to upgrade the lines without the volume of customers and volume of customers is why I want to live here…there aren’t any! Catch 22 all over again. When BT was a national industry they would have had to upgrade everything everywhere but the free market allows them to only go where the customers are. One day, if Mr Bliar and his ilk get their way we’ll all be concreted over to make way for new housing etc then we might get decent services. Like everything else it’s the downside of country living, higher fuel prices, 36 mile round trip to our nearest Tesco (not that I wanna shop there anyway), proposed new taxes on 4x4s thanks to the Chelsea tractor brigade and no proper access to the best of modern technology. Still we have got the best ever postal service…on the button 6 days a week you can set your watch by postman pat at 06.45. And I sure as hell wouldn’t want to live in an urban conurbation! Hey Ho some you win and some you lose!
al4x
as highlander says its tough **** if your miles from the exchange. Being with BT gives you some ability to push when you have problems anyone else who relies on the same line then is pretty much helpless to do anything about it so you're probably best staying with BT
Markio
Thanks for the replies so far. I'll check out the suggestions Pin, cheers. If i am screwed and best with BT then i'll live with it, i just want to be sure.
dazzyboi
I use UKFSN which is a reseller of Entanet Very good service, usual speeds are around 500-700kb/s on ADSL Max I tend to stay away from the commercial companies as they tend to be the worse. check out UKFSN & enta.net
dibbz2000
Im 5KM from my exchange and I can get broadband at the end of my drive. pin
Find someone in "range" of BT, do a deal with them to share the connection, and shove a wifi router in his place, one in yours.
