There is a lot of history on HMR ammo here, but without doubt, the 17g V-Max outsells every other type of bullet by a BIG margin, for good reason. masmiffy
Is it I believe it is with the 'popular brands' with the poss exception of Winchester and Remington. (think it was them) This apparently came about when they had 'issues' with some of the CCI loaded ammo. There was a batch of HMR ammo which was 'underloaded' with powder so the story went. Remington then decided to load their own. (this would need verification) There was also an 'issue' people supposedly had with the blue and red tips. Red being 'more accurate' than blue (or vice versa) I called Hornaday in USA and was told there can be no difference as it is just the pigment used to colour the polymer. At that time they did confirm their ammo is loaded by CCI Edited June 26, 2013 by masmiffy
masmiffy
CCI Ammunition loads all of the .17 HMR ammunition for the CCI, Federal Cartridge, Hornady, and Remington brands. Wikipedia!! (yes there are 'other' loaders mentioned Dekers) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.17_HMR Availability[edit] A .17 HMR round with a ballistic tip (left) compared with a .22 Long Rifle round (right) Cartridges for .17 HMR come with bullets that weigh 15.5-grain (1.00 g), 17-grain (1.1 g), and 20-grain (1.3 g), and come in designs such as polymer (ballistic) tipped, hollow points, soft points, and FMJ. The terminal ballistics of the lightweight expanding bullets limit the .17 HMR to small game animals and varmints. .17 HMR ammunition is less common and more expensive than the .22 caliber rimfire rounds, but this is changing as the popularity of .17 HMR rifles gathers momentum.[6] 17 HMR rifles and ammo have continued to sell briskly. It may be interesting to note that large retailer Wal-Mart sells CCI .17 HMR in some of their suburban locations. Following the success of the .17 HMR, the .17 Hornady Mach 2 (.17 HM2), was introduced in early 2004. The .17 HM2 is based on the .22 LR (slightly longer in case dimensions) case necked down to .17 caliber using the same bullet as the HMR but at a velocity of approximately 2,100 feet per second (640 m/s) in the 17-grain (1.1 g) polymer tip loading. A case of .17 HMR rounds with hollow points. A growing number of companies offer .17 HMR ammunition. CCI Ammunition loads all of the .17 HMR ammunition for the CCI, Federal Cartridge, Hornady, and Remington brands. However, the ammunition is loaded with different bullets to different specifications.[7] Ammunition is also available from Winchester, PMC and Sellier & Bellot. Citing safety concerns about the round's use in semi-automatic firearms, Remington issued a product safety warning and recall notice.[8][9] Edited June 26, 2013 by masmiffy

Dekers
CCI 20grain hollow / soft point When my HMR was brand new it would spit this stuff over about a 4" group, circa 10,000 rounds down the line they group well now, but for the VAST majority of my requirements they do not work, the 17g V-Max does for me. BSA-airgunner
My 452 was spraying around six inches spread at 50 yards . Five shots clean then repeat after thirty rounds it settled now im happy to head shoot at 100 yards......
wymberley
I had no intention of buying a 17 HMR but when faced with a second hand Anschutz 1517 Walnut Thumbhole with an 18" barrel, when you and your local RFD (not the seller) can not find a single blemish, no sign of a moderator, bipod or a scope being fitted or a shot fired, for less than a month's war pension, what can one do? CCI may or may not load many different brand names but when I tried a slack handful of those locally available, there was a marked difference in group size. Trouble is, one's luck can't last forever as mine prefers the most expensive. Damn it!
Gimlet
20 grn hollows ricochet like pigs, don't expansion well against rabbits producing runners and they don't shoot as flat as V maxes. They're quite good for head shooting foxes but otherwise there's little point. Find which brand of 17 grn ballistics your rifle prefers, buy them by the slab and stick to them. Well, that could be the case, and when you have put a few hundred rounds down it and cared for the barrel well, I suspect you will find it handles all the 17g V-Max types VERY similarly! Mind favoured the Hornady Red tips for starters, but they all seem to do ok now!
wymberley
when you have put a few hundred rounds down it Working on it! On a very blustery day at 50 yards and 5 shot groups Hornady gave me 0.68, Winchester 0.43 and Remington 0.28". I zeroed the Remington at 110 yards and was under 1" but it really was somewhat blowy. Dead calm today so will poop off a few more.

Nothing wrong with any HMR doing under 1" at 110 yards in blowy conditions, lets face it, you took bunnies head of with every shot on that basis! Gimlet
Can't say my HW has got any more tolerant as time has gone by. 2000+ rounds down the line it still loves Winchesters, Hornadys are so-so and it won't stick Remingtons at any price. Every barrel is different as we all know, mine absolutely hated Remington's up front. I bought every type I could find in the early days and ended up with half a box of loads that it didn't like, a year or two back I decided to use up all the extras and was amazed that they all seemed ok, even the Remington! That's my rifle with my cleaning etc, they are all different!
Dekers
CCI 20gn are the most accurate in mine. I seem to remember I got about a 4" group with these up front. For some reason they seem to fly about 1" up and 1" left of the 17g in mine now, but they group well, I just have little or no need of this type of ammo! Thunderbird
It's funny how rifles differ so much isn't it? I've tried them all in mine.
