Still On Spring Rape

During the week I had 2 phone calls off separate farmers saying pigeons on their crop, one about barley and the other about the spring rape I've shot for the last couple of weekends. I decided to shoot the rape Saturday and the barley on the Sunday. I watched both fields during the week and they had a good number of birds with flight lies going to both. Due to a number of reasons I only managed to get out for a couple of hours on the rape. It was hot and very still and the birds proved hard to decoy. I shot from 4.30-6.30 and picked 44 birds.

Sunday came and I made my way towards the barley, checking a few other fields on the way. There wasn't much showing anywhere which wasn't a good start. I finally got to the barley that the birds had been building up nicely on through the week only to find the farmer had placed a gas banger in the field!! I watched for 30 mins but it had done its job and the birds were nowhere to be seen. I gave the farmer a ring and he said he'd forgotten I'd said I would come over. I left the farm rather annoyed and started looking elsewhere. I eventually came back to the same rape as Saturday and the flight line was fairly busy. I chose the field and set up in a thin patch of rape. To start with I just used a few dead birds on spikes and 3 landers. The birds were very spooky at first and I had to change the pattern a few times to get them to show any interest. I reluctantly put the magnet out thinking it would be the kiss of death after using it the day before but I was wrong. The birds came in straight away and became more confident. I ended the afternoon with 82 picked.

Cheers

Ben
