does it have to be a soft top? why not save your money and get a rev3 mr2 turbo 245bhp standard! built to compete with the f355 hence the similar design there very reliable its bad owners that seem to ruin them and make them unreliable a little bit of fiddling and around £500 and 300bhp is safe and a little it more and 350bhp is and that will test most things you will encounter on the road! or get a drivers car a honda integra type-r yes only 200bhp but will pull the pants down on the 2.8 boxter round a track the 3.2 is a bit harder to do il add!. a nice one will cost you 4-5k and you will get 35-40mpg on normal driving ! but if something a bit newer is what your after then id get the s2000 over a boxter !

I had a look at a few today and for about 6k they weren't that great , one guy I met buys and sells these types of cars had a BMW Z4 3.0 it was a lot better looking inside the cabin than the porsche and you get more for your money for a newer car.

or £6k?

Porsches are easy to work on and not that expensive for parts. You want a Boxster S as the standard ones are dog slow. Avoid TTs, very very boring to drive and the main dealers are crooks! The S2000 is a great car but there isn't a lot of room in them and you have to thrash them to get the best out of them. 350z is worth a look if you can get past the fuel consumption and plastic dash.

I've driven or owned all of the above and want my missus to get something like that...all she wants is her MX5. Nothing really provides the same enjoyment for the price. They are not fast but they are great fun to drive and parts are laughably cheap. Not the same badge appeal as some of the others but no one will come up and say "oh, shame...you couldn't afford a 911?"

Talking of which, 911s are great cars too. All of the air cooled ones are going up in value and you'll get classic insurance. I look after several 911s for customers and they are great cars.

But of the lot I'd have the 350z. As fast as anything else, great fun and reliable. Everything I'd look for.

Don't even think about a 6K Porsche. The most expensive Porsche you buy will be the cheapest one you own, trust me.

For 6K go for something more modern and easier on the garage bills. Audi TT is a cheaper route.

Besides if you buy a Boxster you are still always going to want a 911.

Not (necessarily) true. I bought my Porsche (1986 944) for considerably less than 6k (though I spent a while looking and knew what I was looking for and what to expect). Had it nearly 5 years and 40,000 miles now, and while it's had the odd slightly painful bill, they've been much less than the depreciation on any modern car. (I do some spanner work myself, but have limited skills and facilities).

It's not the fastest car in the world, but it is an excellent fun car, handles like a dream and looks great in an 80s way (think Knight Rider car). Unfortunately getting a bit long in the tooth now, so I might upgrade to a more recent 944 or even a 968...
