A hot hot day.

I posted a couple of days ago that I had seen good pigeon and corvid traffic into a patch of laid barley. I chose to go this afternoon with a friend and honestly I could hardly have chosen worse conditions. The sun was in our eyes most of the time (we were under the only trees that could give us any cover), the wind was wrong (straight into our faces) and it was very hot, 29 degrees.

The two laid patches were the size of tennis courts and had been devastated by corvid activity. One patch was too far out to decoy to but the other one was just about right and we put both rotaries in that patch. It was evident early on that the pigeons could not get into the decoys due to the strong wind in our faces and we had to push both rotaries out to 50m so that the birds could swirl round either side towards the rotaries.

Most birds came into view from a long way off and with the sun shining through the netting we had to keep very still. Some came over the trees we were under from behind and only if we were alert could we get a shot at them. I had spotted about 400 corvids in the two previous days but they are very canny creatures and most decided to disappear when we started to shoot. However the strong flight line of pigeons more than made up for the lack of crows. I clicked corvids and my companion clicked pigeons and we shot for four hours in some pretty awful heat but it was well worth it as we shot 163 pigeons and 66 corvids (I am pleased to say that high percentage were carrion crows) for a total bag of 229 head. I used 254 cartridges and my companion slightly less.

I was in a rush to get the birds into the cooler so I didn't take any pictures of the bag just a bag full of empties from today!!
