30-6
Will a shotgun (or rifle) really take out a tyre like they do in the films, especially if it's moving.? Made of rubber and inflated, I don't think I would stand in front of one to try.
Baldrick
A bit of a subjective question, but the answer is 'yes, in most circumstances'. A tyre can't stand up to an ounce of SG buckshot (or any size shot at close range), and a tyre will be shredded by any centrefire calibres. You'd be taking a serious risk with a .22RF though. njc110381
A rifle certainly would. The power of a centre fire is crazy to say the least, it'd probably go through the wheel too with the right round and depending on calibre! I'd imagine shotgun would tear up a tyre with the right shot, they have a fair amount of power in them too. Not something to be attempted, but easily possible. Why do you ask?
mossy835
if you watch cops on sky you will see a yank cop take out a car tyre, that was traveling 70 mph, good shot it was.

dunganick
a tyre under pressure is a very dangerous thing to shoot. Most of us have seen the video of the yanks shooting the tyre and the piece of shrapnel flying back and narrowly missing the shooter. I doubt a rimfire would do hte job (but you never know) i know that tyres of the deflated kind do like to bounce things around, particually airgun pellets  not a good backstop. if i was going to do this i would make sure the tyre was a good 200 yards away and i would still want to think carefully about where i stood if i was watching. On another note, centerfires may contain alot of energy, but the reason this is so graphically demonstrated is the way it is delivered. They are very efficient at delivering all of the energy stored (certainly with expanding projectiles) Rimfires still hold no small amount of energy. They just dont deliver it in a very impressive way I would expect a shotgun would make a right mess of a pressurised tyre, but i wouldnt like to get that close. I expect with a shotgun you would be likely to get ricochets on an un inflated tyre if you were using smallish shot. be very careful if messing about with shooting tyres. They have the potential to cause a nasty accident.
30-6
Find it hard to believe that a projectile would penetrate an inflated object being made of rubber especially if moving at high speed. I am not going to try it just curious.
Baldrick
A car tyre revolving and advancing at 70mph is not high speed, relative to a centrefire round. As Nick wisely points out, it's best not to experiment.
njc110381
A .223 round travels at about 2000 mph (1 fps=0.682mph)! So 70 is nothing
Mungler
How bizarre. I had the same detailed discussion on the way back from shooting with my mate last Sunday. Some tart in a Chelsea tractor doing 27mph in the national limit all the way home. Guessed she was ******. Wow. This site is brilliant: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm Hell, there goes tomorrow at work.
Dunkield
He has added the Buick of Truth now (this guy has waaaaay to much spare time) and shot everything apart from the tyres (tires) http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/thebuickotruth.htm Drop him a line and ask him to do it for you
Mungler
Instead of photos he ought to get into videoing his truth tests. EDIT: Damn you and your box of truth, I had work to do today

C***** your not gonna tell me that everything you see on tv is fact...mostly it's staged for your entertainment. DO NOT try this at home isn't a bad adage
