out with the Air Wolf and Nitesite

So the Reading festival is back, so the next few nights will be very loud till pretty late! So time to make the most of the sleeplessness and get out for a bit of bunny bashing!

Tonight it was pretty quiet though - mostly due to my stupidity! I left the house and walked up onto my perm without taking any pellets with me. oops. A quick rustle around in the pockets provided about half a mag's worth. I'd already set up the Nitesite so couldn't be bothered to walk back home and then out again. As it happens there wasn't much about, except a few badgers (TB free, we hope!), and a few deer. On the second field though there were a few rabbits about and picked off these three taken up to about 45yds. Then the battery went dead on the Nitesite.

On the whole, have had better planned sessions, but it was a happy enough trip in very bright moonlight and a gentle breeze to keep the humidity at bay, so a fun trip out...despite my disorganisation :whistling:

Sorry about the photo, not great quality from the phone!

Hi Chris

Nice looking setup you have there. I have a question if you can help?

I am just about to buy a nitesite off a friend to use for bunny bashing on my permission. How do you go about initial targetting on the bunnies with one i.e. finding them. Do you just scan about over the likely area with the nitesite until you see one or use a lamp to find out where they roughly are before using the nitesite or do you have something like an NV monocular as well?

I hope this doesnt come across as too dense but I have done very little lamping in the past and have never used night vision up until now.

well, it's a good question. I did have the NS50 but for a couple of reasons i took it back for a full refund and bought the NS200 instead. firstly it was pulling the rubber off the eyepiece on the scope, but secondly, although 50yds is perfect for air rifle ranges, it meant you had to be that close before you could really pick em up on the screen, which meant either stalking at snail's pace everywhere just in case there was something there, which took AGES, or walk normally and risk spooking them! With the NS200, you have much more range, so i have it all set up, walk 50yds, have a good scan, then repeat, because you'll see stuff at 100 yds, so then you can start stalking into range well before they have a chance to hear you. I don't have a NV monocle or anything like that, but I guess it could be useful!

I don't use a lamp at all. The advantage of night vision is they don't have any idea you're there until it's too late; flashing a lamp across ruins that! The thing is, I know roughly where the bunnies are going to be anyway. Nothing beats doing a bit of homework so you can be more prepared. Great bits of kit though; highly recommended :good:

Thanks Chris that was very helpful. Where I am thinking of using it I know where the little furry things come out of so may try some static shooting with it and see how I get on. At least it means I can sit virtually in the open as they cant see me!

It's a really enjoyable way to spend a night! badgers were feeding on the fields within 5yds of me quite happily and you definitely get results - if you bring ammunition with you :whistling:

great shooting chris,

will have to give you one of my NV kits to try against the ns200, you will be plesantly surprised mate,

i used the ns 50 and what a waste, didn,t rate it at all, my buddy got that fed up looking at mine he switched his ns50 off,

the wolf looks brill mate, looks the same coloured stock as mine but i have given mine a couple of coats of boiled linseed oil and to be honest i love the colour of it now and the grain really stands out

only problem with my wolf is i fired 50 shots through my chrono and it is shooting below power

on average it was shooting between 7.4 and 8.2ftlb no higher and no lower so looks like i,ll be giving daystate a ring first thing to see if i can take it down and get it done, one good thing is it is so accurate its hard to believe

i thought my huntsman was nice but this is a real babe , smooth and a pleasure to hold,

keep up the good work on the rabbits mate

cheers Evo

nice gun pal, just another question,do you never fall over any thing with it being pitch black all the time and also when you look at the screen does that not light up your face down to any thing in the field, also just one more after you have looked at the screen how do your eyes ajust to the dark,ps this is no negative question or any thing i just always wonder as i have shot at night for the last 25 years with a lamp and i would fall down some well or some thing with out it,nice shooting as well, cheers simon....

No worries simon, all good questions. Actually this night there was a clear sky and a bright moon so seeing where I was going was easy. On normal nights, I tend to only keep the screen on for long periods once in position on a target. Preserving the eyes adjustment is pretty crucial, so i only put the screen on at intervals and then allow the eyes to start adjusting before walking on. Not fallen down a hole yet! I did get badly stung with nettles though. the farmer had cut the verges so i missed the stalks that can still sting, which they did when i laid down to take a shot. Shouldn't have worn shorts! The glare can be a problem, but mine's got a filter over it so that cuts out plenty without making it hard to see the screen. I find it's worth having a balaclarva over my head anyway, so if it does light up my face, it's not recognisable as a person's face. I've not noticed the quarry being unduly spooked by it.

hope that helps :good:

I'm about 4 miles SE from the site in a straight line, been noisy round here, is the stage/sound/wind different this year, not noticed it in previous years?

i'm not sure. We're NW , but on a hill that looks straight down over the site. it's 4.5 miles, but we look down over the site from a hill, so we get a completely uninterumpted sound line from it. Oh the joys...

  • 2 weeks later...

You must have had a bad NS50, I can pick eye shine up with mine at 100 metres..... Hell I was able to count the bales in a bale wall at 127 metres (lasered distance).

If you have your mag around 7 you do see a lot more. I found that at higher magnification there is glare which dramatically reduced its 'range'

For a screen filter, visit your local car tinted window place. They are ususally happy to give you a small sample which is plenty big enough to cover the screen. I found 'limousine' film was the right one. not sure what % light reduction it was but it was the darkest one they carried if that helps.
