deputy dog
Got offered one the other day from a work mate. Gun, sights and 7litre charging bottle for £500. But I've bought an Huntsman Regal now so my other mate is having it if him. Very good bargains for both guns an accessories mate, snap it up. pabs
Nowt wrong with shooting Hares if they're for the pot.
chrisjpainter
Nowt wrong with shooting Hares if they're for the pot. It's not the shooting of them, it's the tool that's used. sub 12 air rifle? not for me...
The Ghost
As above shooting Hare with a 177 air rifle would not be the first gun I would pick for the task in hand.
FalconFN
I will confess that I don't see hares around here and have never shot one but at sensible ranges I don't really see the problem. A very large buck rabbit will drop as well as any rabbit (actually better in most cases) so a hare that is only marginally bigger will surely do the same. I'm prepared to be corrected but in physical terms a well placed pellet should easily do the business.
pabs
It's not the shooting of them, it's the tool that's used. sub 12 air rifle? not for me... ***, what would you use then? Let me guess. Only a .22 LR using high velocity expanding round. Or maybe a .223 Cf? 'Cos it's a bit bigger than an average buck and looks a bit different? What the hell is wrong with taking a Hare with a headshot with a .177 sub 12ftlb pellet as opposed to taking a large rabbit with the same pellet? Flupping people with this mentality that game has to be taking with a round that will turn them inside out.......
secretagentmole
I have shot Pheasants and Partridges with my sub 12s. I prefer my game with only one piece of lead in it, in a part I do not cook as well!
glenn pigeon shooter
Yes they are all cleaned and put in freezer for Sunday dinners I was surprised myself with shooting hares with a airgun they where all shot in the head stone dead. I couldn't believe how many hares I seen I must of seen 30 odd hares last night we covered quite a lot of ground because my friend is a gamekeeper and he took me around and made sure I was in killing range.i mainly shoot shotgun this is my second air rifle the one before was a break barrel all I can say is the HW100 is something else

glenn pigeon shooter
I've had hares of people that shoot them with FAC rifles and they make a mess of the meat well what's left lol
NickB65
We do not have that many Hares on my perms and when we see them they do not last long. If close enough I will take them with my trusty HW100 in .177 but prefer the .22lr as they are a big solid beasty. Like any shooting it is down to the competance of the shooter and the distance that determins if the gun is sufficient. Yes you would not try and take down a Roe with an airrifle but common sence should prevail. I have a dear friend that even with a guided missile would still miss! lordripon
Just to back glen up. I am the keeper that took glen out for the night of hare reduction....his marksmanship was tested first, I know his rifle is accurate and has been shot through a chronograph resulting in near 12ftlb power levels. all hares were shot at 30yrds maximum range with head shots only!!! glen and his weapon are well capable to do this perfectly. My ground holds massive numbers of them and shooting just 10 a year will guarantee this for years to come, I spend massive amounts of time guarding the estate from long dog men & poachers to stop the constant harassments hares normally attract. As for the stopping power required to shoot hares...people need to get real ! if it takes three No6 shot with 3.6ftlb to cleanly kill a cock pheasant then one 8 grain pellet to the brain with at least 10ftlb will instantly put the lights out on a hare. the most important thing is accuracy!! hit it in the kill zone and its job done. Glenn... great night! great shooting and it was ten not eight, I picked the other miss-marked hares in the barley field the next dawn!! keep up the good work brother.
