dafydd1983
After 4 fruitless outings this week I finally managed to bag my first goose of the season! Waking up and getting to the marsh 3 times in a week for 5am followed by a full days work is very tiring, but it was well worth it this morning. The 2 previous mornings were a learning curve to see how the geese were behaving as they left their roost, plenty about but not quite in range! This morning had forecast 20mph winds, but it was flat calm and didn't bode in my attempt bag a goose! Arriving at the marsh I could hear plenty of goose talk, my hopes lifted, i made my way to my chosen spot as quietly as i could and sat down to wait. Across the river about 70-80yds were a group of around 100 graylags happily feeding oblivious to my presence, I watched these crouched behind some rocks for a good hour, when out of the blue they upped n left, off to their feeding grounds far out of my range, damn! Around 6.30, lots of small skeins of 10-20 strong were lifting and leaving the marsh, I thought my chance had gone.........as I was contemplating packing up, a few of large groups lifted way up the marsh and made their way down in my direction, I allowed the first couple of skeins through as they were on the edge of my ability, following these, a group behind them were only 10 yards up but way back, I thought these are mine! Dont point, dont point, swing the gun, swing the gun! I allowed them in, lifted the gun and shot my first gray of the season! My heart was pumping but I was relieved! the old lab, now 12 yrs old, was off and retrieved it to hand perfectly. Well worth the 4am alarm call and somehow work seemed so much more enjoyable today! tlennox
Took my mate out this morning for a bit of inland decoying and he bagged his first and second Grey, I don't know who was more pleased, him for shooting them or me for calling them in for him. Well done.
