Thinking of buying Discovery 1

Watch out for rot. Check the chassis, body to chassis mounts, inner wings, above the arch and door striker at the b & c pillars, the boot floor and check all the electrics work too. The 200Tdi is a great motor.

I'm just scrapping a Disco 1 and it was a great motor. I'm recycling the engine into my Defender.

A £2.5k budget would get you a couple of good Disco 1's. Mine cost me £1100 and was solid (until I binned it on ice 3 weeks after Moting it :( )

I'd say if you need real 4x4 axle deep mud ability go for it. Otherwise consider a Jap 4x4 they drive like a normal car (Discos aren't that bad a lot more car like than a Defender lol).

For that kind of money you will get a decent jap import Disco 1. These are generally in very good order. I have a Disco 1 on a P plate, ES spec so has the leather, heated electric seats etc. Apart from these goodies, it's uncomplicated electronics.

Had mine a good few years and is a trust worthy motor. Yes there are corrosion problems, so far mine has had inner front wings done, small patch in near side footwell, body sill box section, rear arches where the doors open and a bit on the rear floor/chassis mount. Not bad considering its age. Mines been fully rebushed too. Was quite fortunate with mine as I bought it off a gaffer of a large haulage company so was well maintained from new. Has been repainted at some point in its original metallic grey and looks smart.

Apart from that it's been spot on, serviced regular just as you would with any vehicle, but the bits are dirt cheap. Coils all round too, so none of these cart springs that you find on the rear end of most jap pickups, so you get a nice ride and great off road.

It's like an old slipper, love driving it, does everything I want and costs me very little. A set of BFG AT's on and gets me everywhere I want to get to.

Kind regards

Jonathan

Edit: just found this one on eBay. 200967487132 (copy and paste that number into eBay search). Looks a canny one, would want to see pics of rear arches etc first, and I don't know how far away from you it is either.

I'd spent £1800 on the car & the rest on a welder.

As long as the chassis is alright, the rest can be sorted.

Most people scrap them cos they can't be asked to fix them.

Ask yourself how many old Terreno's do you see still on the road?

there's 1 on my culdesac,I take it with your name you like land rovers so you are bound to be biast towards other vehicles :(

You will also find the majority of imports leave there country's after 10 yrs give or take a yr,

My hilux has been in the British weather for 8 yrs so as far of rusting goes it's got a few good yrs in it yet before it even starts :)

Get a 2.2 diesel Frontera - cheap to run - better drive than many others - very under-rated. For £2.5 - you can get a low mileage minter.

Good 4x4 and nice to drive till the fly by wire injector pump goes. £1200 of a job.

And they go faulty on a regular basis.

I have one customer that has had two pumps on his Frontera and it`s only done 135.000 miles.

And he is on his second dash pod that also go faulty regular. £395 plus fitting every time.

I have a 300tdi discovery and so far been impressed. Rust is a big killer on them and once they start it can be a big job to keep chasing saying that is only bodywork that goes on them the chassis are normally solid. Apart from rust thought they are pretty bomb proof underneath you will see a lot of high milers well over 200,000 miles on them, also parts are dirt cheap for both second hand a new stuff. However the electrics on the interior for all the goodies are know to be a pain in the backside, so in my opinion dont bother with the higher spec models as you will end up spending most your time fixing the gadgets just by a basic model in good condition. Also most with leather seats are cracked and look terrible so cloth ones are a good bet mine has got 140,000 miles and the seats dont look bad at all.

Its important to remember though these are 15-20 year old motors, i consider mine reliable however in the last 6 months it has had a new alternator, power steering pump, door locking actuator, front swivel bearing all cheap jobs if you can do it yourself but expensive if you have to pay a garage.

However i only spent 1k on mine and if i had a 2.5k budget i wouldnt be looking at a Disco 1 even if it was a jap import with not a spec of rust. For 2.5k i would be looking at Disco TD5 or something newer like a crew cab pick up.
