Lawyers for former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein have asked a US court to halt his execution.

In a last-minute filing to the US District Court of Washington, Hussein's lawyers asked for a temporary stay of execution.

The moves comes after US officials in Baghdad confirmed that Saddam is still in American custody.

Iraqi officials claim that the former Iraqi dictator may be hanged within hours as the prime minister Nuri al-Maliki met US officials to determine whether the execution could go ahead before a week-long religious holiday.

Mr al-Maliki has already given the order, after approvals from the president and justice minister, according to Sami al-Askaria, a close political ally of the prime minister.

Earlier, Saddam's chief defence lawyer said that the former dictator had been handed over to Iraqi authorities.

'The American side has notified us that they have handed over the president to the Iraqi authorities,' said Khalil al-Dulaimi, head of Saddam's defence team.

'They told us the president is no longer under the authority of the American forces and they requested us not to go to Baghdad.'

But US State Department spokesman Tom Casey confirmed that Saddam is still in US custody.

'My understanding is that there's been no change in his status,' he added.

As speculation continues to mount over when he will be executed, an Iraqi television channel quoted a judge saying Saddam would die on Friday or Saturday.

One of Saddam's defence lawyers, Najib Naimi, also said he thought the former Iraqi dictator might well die on Saturday after lawyers were told to collect his belongings.

Mr Naimi said: 'The Americans called the defence team to pick up his personal belongings. All these indications show he will probably be executed tomorrow.'

But senior Iraqi officials have dismissed such comments, and said some in the cabinet are pushing for it to be put off for a month or more.

Iraq's highest appeal court confirmed earlier this week that Saddam must be executed within 30 days.

Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has appeared on state television and insisted there will be no review or delay of Saddam's death sentence.

Breaking news on Sky,Cherie Blair has appealed on Saddams behalf that hanging him will impinge upon his human rights. The case will be heard in Brussels and it looks as if he will be allowed to return to England, the land of at least one of his offspring.A labour back bencher has offered to adopt him as a gay lover to save any shame on the labour party and Ken Livingstone is planning a street naming party ( only costing Londoners 770k ) in his honour.Rumour has it he will open the 2012 olympics as a guest of animal aid.

A seven bed house in Slough is undergoing extensive refurbishment pending his arrival,a local school has been demolished to facillitate the building of a palace/mosque.All roads within two miles will be shut, without notice, every friday to allow prayer meetings.Any complaints will be deemed racist or homophobic and the police will not tolerate such behaviour.

OR we could just let the ****** hang, bring our troops home and let them get on with it.I know which I prefer but which do you think is more likely

found this rather poignant comment on an american news website about sadam.....

"Death of a dictator, charged with 140 deaths as opposed to President Bush getting more than 3000 troops killed. Hopefully we get justice the way Iraq did. Saddams half brothers also slain, hung one after another. Bush and Cheney after their term ends?? Probably not because they covered their #### tracks with the patriot act. Then both plan to move to a country in which they cannot be brought back and tried from, the same country in which half of nazi germany's reich had moved to not be tried for war crimes."

do you think history will repeat itself?

On offence Lancs Lad, but a little correction.

It was Northern Ireland and as a member of the security forces there I would say we could have beaten them. But we had an unseen enemy and he wasn’t called an insurgent he was called a politician.

How many send there son/daughters these days to war?

Good luck to our boys overseas and NO SURRENDER!
