John_R
I just picked up an old SxS as per title. A boxlock DTE, absolutely mint, the guy who bought it originally said he never put more than a few boxes of carts through it and I can believe it. I even got the original Parker Hale branded gun slip, and a cleaning kit branded "Norfolk 2" by Lightwood Fieldsports of Banbury. The action is still stiff to open, so I have cleaned and lubed it all, and will get it out and shoot ASAP to help settle it in. My query is how to date the gun, and maybe find whatever model nomenclature PH might have given it back in the day. I have searched the threads as best I can, and Googled some but not getting anything relevant. I do see Ugartechea sell it as a Mod 40 now. Would anyone here know how to find this information? Cheers! John ( PS: Lightwood Fieldsports operated from 1977 to 1983 ) Edited November 7, 2013 by john_r
Whitebridges
Sounds like you've found a nice gun there I hope you enjoy using it. Might be worth dropping Ugartechea a line. You can e-mail them via this website: http://www.ugartecheashotguns.com/web_ingles.htm
John_R
Good point, I was browsing their site earlier which is where I saw the same gun as a Mod 40.

Gunman
Spanish guns of this period all bear a date stamp that will consist of a letter and number [N1 for example] .Usually on the barrel flats near the hook on the front lump . Let me know what it is and I will look it up on my list .
John_R
Thanks all. It is all locked away right now, so will post any more details tomorrow.
John_R
Information from John (many thanks!) shows this to be a 603, by virtue of the 25" barrels choked 1/4 and 1/2. Here is a shot of the lumps:
John_R
I found some information online, which if I understand correctly, suggests this gun might be a 1984 item. The D2 suggests that, as far as I can see. Does anyone know what the I4 means?

triumphant59
D2 is not the date stamp, it is in the bottom left corner of you photo but I can't make out what it is. Not sure about makers stamp, a Ugartechea would have I U or Ugartechea stamped on the barrel flats. What makes you think it is a Ugartechea? John_R
There is a fairly poorly stamped B2 where you suggest to look. 1982 then if I have got that right. As for the Ugartechea query, there is a mark on the flat of the left barrel, just above the proof marks, which I was told was Ugartechea. Also, it was known that they made guns for PH to resell. It really does look just like the guns on the Ugartechea site.
Gunman
Many production guns will have a variety of odd stamps, letters and numbers that only mean something to the people involved with its manufacture. Apart from proof and makers trade marks the rest are irrelevant and will drive you mad trying to figure out what they mean .
JohnfromUK
Guns proved in Spain do carry a date code for the proof year - and I suspect B2 is that code. You can Google and get the codes such as at http://www.shotguns.se/html/spain.html

Its difficult to see from your photo if the mark is that of Ugartechea but I guess it is because very few other makers used an emblem rather than just letters. Ugartechea where one of the few Spanish makers that didn't join the ill-fated Diarm group that took almost an entire industry under in 1985. John_R
Once again thanks for the input to this enquiry. I took it round the sporting layout at Bisley this week, should have shot better but the gun behaved just like new. I was caught out by the auto safety a couple of times, will probably deal with that later. I also need to get used to the double triggers!
