Advise on carrier

Having spent some considerable time and effort trying to resolve a claim for damage during transit, and also receiving products that were sent to me by mistake, and the carriers blatant disregard for customer service, I would advise those posting goods not to use My Hermes. You of course have the right to use any carrier you wish, but be warned!!!! I still have parcels delivered by mistake three weeks ago and they promise to collect but never do, and still no resolution for damaged goods.

You get what you pay for. I use UPS exclusively (through an intermediary - interparcel.com). Hardly ever had a problem. Items are tracked, drivers are polite, professional, in UPS uniforms, and drive UPS marked vans. When there is a problem - a UPS agent calls me to say there is a problem - i never have to chase stuff up. GBP9.59 inc vat (through interparcel.com) for a parcel delivery to the UK (except highlands, islands, NI, etc) . Sure you can pay muppets in white vans to send stuff cheaper, but in the long run it is not worth it.

parcel2go are an agent - like interparcel, but I don't rate them. There is no customer service with parcel2go - while interparcel are just a phone call or web-chat away.

I ordered a tablet pc from carphonewarehouse. I arranged for it to be delivered to my parents house today, and not for it to be left anywhere else (it had to be signed for) My mother has just phoned me at work to say that it had been delivered to her neighbour, who is a 'not very honest'. The neighbour, a young girl, did give knock on my parents door and handed it over. She has been known to take in parcels, and sign for them with a bogus name. The courier firm was DPD.

I don't know whether to contact carphonewarehouse and inform them what happened.

Most courier companies have some small print in their T&C's that lets them make "a reasonable attempt" to deliver the item. This usually includes neighbours. Strangely, in the mail order world, there is more and more demand for deliveries to be left with neighbours. In your situation you'd rather not!

In your case I'm not sure if your instructions were passed on, ignored or trumped by the T&C's. Drivers never like re-deliveries.

It's always been a grey area. If you're not happy, take it up with CPW who can take it up with the courier.

I've had all sorts of experience with various parcel companies. Remember, a lot of couriers are owner/drivers and although they represent a courier company, they are effectively self-employed and usually paid per parcel. No-one wants to re-deliver so they will always try to leave it with someone.

Lobbing things over fences or gates is not on but does happen. The other week I left a note for the Hermes driver to specifically leave it in a safe place and leave me a note where to find my parcel. He did just that so no complaints from me. Our local DPD driver is also very good. Yodel tend to be pants (they were losing £1m per week and tended to get the lower quality drivers). I had to get a suitcase collected from a hotel in Cologne and returned to the UK. I tried TNT (started to wish I'd used FedEx or UPS) but TNT delivered it in 2 days so very impressed.

It's not necessarily the courier brand but just the individual who happens to serve your area.
