The Essex Hunter
This last week seemed to drag just like when you were at school waiting for the summer holiday to start…. Although I am used to long periods in a pigeon hide, the thought of waiting in my first high tower reminded me from the all the WW2 films I’ve watched in the past! With %95 of my shooting being at night it was a pleasant change to look through the scope during the day… Shooting foxes off my quad sticks has made me a little dependent on them so I quickly adapted the long plank (seat) into a bench with my ruck sack on the front and gun slip as a stock support and waited……and waited…. One doe stopped to browse after a few had charged across the ride and that was her last browse and my first fallow… With an early start on Saturday I was placed in a light weight high seat and found that quite strange but placed my sticks across at chest height on the seat part of the frame giving me far better support for the gun. 2 young bucks came into a freshly planted clearing around 40 minuets apart with the pick up time fast approaching they went in to the estate truck and back for a cupper. In the early afternoon a buck came into the ride presenting only a neck shot and was duly dispatched, I forgot to take a picture as time was pressing to get the other deer back to the farm. With the sun racing its way down I was given a brief to be ready with my sticks on the way to the last stand of the trip. It was a 500 yard walk a doe bounced out of the trees on to ride around 175 yards in front of me so a quick flick of the sticks, one click of the safety and down she went… A vey enjoyable trip and great company with the other lads… TEH Edited November 10, 2013 by The Essex Hunter
