955i
Just wondering as I don't know my doctor, a member of parliament or a justice of the peace. One of the only people I know that would qualify is my ex-wife, would she be able to give a reference as we are now divorced and therefore no longer related/spouses

steve_b_wales
As Far as i am aware you dont need to be any of the mentioned , my manager at work did mine. As above. If you know someone who has their own business, they can be a referee.

HDAV
Ex wife I think would count as family but check with FEO they have relaxed the list of approved referees iirc see latest guidance notes and new forms. It's more important they have known you personally than their profession but how about your accountant ? Guidance https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/246643/Guidance_on_Firearms_Licensing_Law.pdf Edited November 17, 2013 by HDAV
HDAV
OK so from latest guidance: Referees 10.13 A referee may be of any background or occupation. A referee must be of good character, and someone whom the police may trust to give honest replies to the questions contained on the referee form (it should be noted that the referee is not required to guarantee the applicant’s good behaviour). 10.14 Members of the applicant’s family may not act as referees. In the absence of a court ruling, ‘family’ is taken to mean the following: wife, husband, mother, father, son, daughter, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandparent and mother/father/sister/brother/son/daughter-in-law. Cousins are not regarded as immediate family, but co-habiting partners should be considered as ‘family’ for these purposes and should not be accepted. Serving police officers, police support staff, Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) or their support staff may not act as referees. Registered firearms dealers may not act as referees except under circumstances defined in paragraph 10.15. ex wife/husband isn't specifically mentioned

955i
get a friend who has either sgc/fac to do it Apparently that is not enough now, a friend used to sign his mates off as he was a cert holder and had his own business, but when he let the business go they said he couldn't sign anymore. Not sure about this as never asked him to sign for me
Fisheruk
I've had the same friend give me a reference for the last ten years . She's an administration assistant. Never been a problem. We've known each other for 25 years.
