aris
My first car was a Golf I 1300 - owned a Golf III Gti for 15 years - just got myself a VW Tiguan - which is basically a Golf on Steroids - with 4-wheel drive and large tyres Can't beat them for quality - you will not be disappointed. I was very close to getting a Golf 7 instead of the Tig - but I needed a larger more practical car There is also a great community out there - check out some of the VAG forums. If you're into tinkering, get yourself a Vag-Com cable and software which allows you to do diagnostics and modifications: http://www.ross-tech.com/

fruity
Its the GTD I have ordered, unfortunately have to wait until march to get it! Yes I was told there would be a fair wait , but luckily enough Sinclair vw had an pre ordered car cancelled , so we had that one early but with the second colour choice not the first

aris
A bit of a snob then are we. Good business sense - when you come to sell it on, the badge matters.

norfolk dumpling
5 door version made in Sth Africa and there are a few reliabllility issues. If you can afford hotter model go for 3 door GTD or GTI as these are built in Germany.
lambchop
Had vw's all my life can't fault em, currently on a mk5 golf and passat and will be for a while. I've owned seat and not a snob but have just driven leon and golf back to back golf still felt better put together especially interior. Really impressed with current skoda's though, work has an estate superb and well it's superb!
Livefast123
Current MK4 Golf GTi petrol is on 200,000 and still feels tight to drive. She'll be replaced next year hopefully with a Mk7 estate.
triumphant59
In my opininion VW's whether they are Golfs, Tiguans, Passats or Polo's are in a class of their own. I have a Toyota Avensis (company car no choice) and it does not come near VW quality. Wife has a tiguan, son a 14 year old Polo that hasn't a speck of rust and doesn't burn a drop of oil. I read that the UK is VW's biggest market outside Germany even bigger that the US! I beggars belief why anyone would buy anything else unless you can afford an Audi! Mark L
I've also had a few golfs over the years never had a minute of bother with then, although the last car I bought was a insignia because I wanted the extra space it is also a very good car I can't complain !!!! Pastiebap
Never owned one myself, but any of my friends that have one (gtd upto R32) rave about them and do not have a bad word to say. Only complaint i've heard was regarding price of VW main dealer servicing costs. One friend in particular binned his BMW for a Golf and swears that the Golf is a far better motor. aris
VW dealers (aka the stealers) are very expensive - but there are loads of independent specialists out there who can do repairs, diagnostics, etc. Loads of quality aftermarket parts too. If you fancy doing some hacking of your ECU, you can buy a Ross-Tech VCDS unit - http://www.ross-tech.com/
