I'm not that easy with the HMR out around 150 yards, yes, for sure, it is capable, and more, but if I was looking for a rifle to perform at that distance on a daily basis I would look elseware. Until/if we get the 17WSM the alternatives may be a chunk more expensive.

17g V-Max is what works in the HMR, other ammo is out there but very limited use.

cz 455 are great rifles and as accurate as any anschutz i have owned.the difference between the 17 grn and 20 grn in hmr wont be noticable in my opinion.sounds like you might do well with the new cz .17 hornet and a set of dies or its best part of a quid a shot.i did not rate the savage .17 hornet but others might.

The primary reason I looked for something other than HMR was for crow control, I found the HMR to have very unpredictable terminals on these tough birds. Got clean body hits were the birds got back up a flew up to 1/2 mile before dropping out the sky (I know this coz one or two landed in my neighbours yard) . Bullets often broke up on hitting the primarys in the wing leaving but a feather free patch under the wing and knocking the wind out of them yet not even penetrating the skin (second shots backed this up) I found this as unbelievable as the reader might as did a local keeper, right until it started to occur to him also.

I think in all fairness a small centre fire is a far superior Crow gun. you need not get anything more than a .222 and Hornet or fireball will moderate better than HMR

This refers to the ruger model 77 in hmr ..............................(used years ago) .......... ThIs is how it should have read lol

I know mate it was a very vague attempt at humour but obviously only my strange little mind got it. It just read funny so thought I'd comment. Cheers though mate.

i have both 17grain and 20grain hmr rounds and don't think you will find much difference between the 2,

if it's windy then my .222 is the go to gun and i reload at about 36p per round

using basic reloading gear that cost me about £50-60 of pw members

a lot of people don't like the idea of reloading but on cold wet windy nights when i don't want to be out shooting and don't want to be getting nagged its quite nice to shut myself away and reload some rounds

Lets be honest a small centre fire is one heck of a more effective crow killer even on a still day, a .222 should effectively double your range to boot. I have never bagged that many with a rifle in one day that price mattered much at all and doubt seriously if anyone ever has, its more a case of how many you get a year

Very true i have had more the 12g in one day than with the rifle in a year i was more pointing out that not all cf are £1 a shot mine also is a rabbit gun when its windy,

now i know how to reload i have toyed with the idea of changing my hmr for a 22 hornet but that's another subject

You can make decent reduced power loads for the .222 rem that go below the hornet, there hence is little real requirement for another rig- you could even utilise the hornet bullets at hornet speeds and no real reason why they should not shoot every bit as good. The hornet only has the edge on case capacity for velocity and the IMO unrequired facility to go lower still to match .22 wmr or even less!
