MarkHope
Hi there guys I'm mark and this is this my first time posting on here, I hope you all had a good Christmas and new year? My wife and I are thinking of looking in to adoption this year and I was just wondering if anyone on here has gone through the process of adoption and if you encountered any problems due to having a firearms licence and firearms in the house? Any Information would be helpful regards Mark
martyn2233
Good luck but your firearms should not make any difference to the adoption process martyn

CharlieT
Welcome. I know firearms ownership should have no bearing on it but if I was going through the process the last thing I would tell them is that I shoot or own firearms. It's none of their business and is irrelevant.
Guest rimotu66
Welcome and as said, good luck If you are both loaded and own your own pub then you can adopt me
keg
Welcome. I know firearms ownership should have no bearing on it but if I was going through the process the last thing I would tell them is that I shoot or own firearms. It's none of their business and is irrelevant. Hi Mark, welcome to the world of PW, it's a great place. We have just started down this route and have had our first long interview. Hobbies came up and I mentioned shooting and that I won both shotgun and rifles. The 2 social workers explained that it was good that I had brought it up. They had no issue with it at and rightly so, but it does need disclosing. The reason I quoted Charlie's post is that it is their business. They are placing a child that may already have physical and mental health issues. If a child, either accidently or on purpose, got access to those firearms there would be hell to pay. As it was explained to use at the first open meeting:- "Let us be clear with you, these children are in care for a reason, it is highly unlikely that you will end up with a Roses round the door chocolate box child" They then went on to explain some of the reasons why these children are in care and what behaviour to expect. CharlieT
Keg With respect the OP is speaking of adoption not fostering. Whilst it may have a bearing when fostering a child with issues, I fail to see how it is of any relevance whatsoever when adopting. bruno22rf
Go for it, if you have both decided that there is room in your lives to give a child a loving future then you have my total respect and best wishes.

felly100
Welcome mate. Wouldn't the adoption agency find out anyway when they do all your background checks. Honesty is the best policy and besides the problems would arise if you had been turned down or had your guns taken off you for some reason. Good luck,John. keg
Keg With respect the OP is speaking of adoption not fostering. The relevance is that the child has possibly had several let downs in life already. They do not want to offer a place to a child without knowing absolutely everything. As someone has already pointed out, you being a licence holder would come out anyway when background checks are run. As Felly says, honesty is the best policy. Should we pass the medicals, it's the start of a long road that can take up to 2 years and requires serious commitment. We are lucky we already have a daughter thanks to the miracle of IVF so I would rather smooth the path than put bumps in it. Mark, good luck! MarkHope
Hi Mark, welcome to the world of PW, it's a great place. The reason I quoted Charlie's post is that it is their business. They are placing a child that may already have physical and mental health issues. If a child, either accidently or on purpomissse, got access to those firearms there would be hell to pay. As it was explained to use at the first open meeting:- "Let us be clear with you, these children are in care for a reason, it is highly unlikely that you will end up with a Roses round the door chocolate box child" They then went on to explain some of the reasons why these children are in care and what behaviour to expect. Hi there Guys Thank you for all your kind words of support that you have give, I would like to say that it go's with out saying that I would disclose that I have shot gun licence, and that it would come up in the check's. Keg answered my question the best that it was taken as a positive and not a negative, especially in to days society with all the negative press there has been around Shooting. I know it should not matter but we are all like minded people on here, but it only take's 1 misguided social worker that thinks shooting is the most evil thing going. Many Thanks Mark
beeredup
yeah i would disclose it too, you have nothing to hide and people who do try to conceal and hide their shooting activities in my opinion do nothing for the image of shooting and the people who do it! surely keeping it hush hush makes it appear sinister to those who maybe interested to find out more about shooting? good luck with your plans to adopt we where unable to naturally have children and adoption or fostering was a possibility for us which in the end we decided against so now its me n the mrs and a bonkers sprocker
