Proudly
On our permission theres been a few times there has been 60-80 geese sitting in the fields. We are inland, 2.5 miles from a reservoir. Would it be worth a shot decoying? Any advice appreciated

E.w.
It's always worth decoying, there's so much sport to have you only need 6 or 12 decoys and you will have some great action.

demonwolf444
Went out the other day, nothing about; shot one rat in the hedge back, when its like this i practice bird calls, my goose call is "rubbish". Or at least it sounds nothing like a goose to me, the geese were landing maybe 800ish yards away in a maize crop where they have been going for about two weeks. Stood in the hedge calling my call, every time geese called i called back, and ( much to my surprise ) they were coming right in to me right past the hedge i was stood in, they landed about 50 yards in to the field from me after several passes. They caught wind of me and took flight, but i called again and they dropped 75 yards away in the same field. I stayed for about half an hour calling, as i wasn't shooting ( no steel and damasc barrels ) the more birds that dropped into the natural pattern the more pulling power my call seemed to have, and eventually i stopped when i friend entered the field i was in. Explaining to him what i had done he obviously did not believe me that i called about 250 geese and 10 duck into the middle of a field. Well right on que the duck got up to go back to the pond and then 250 geese came straight over us.. Glad i filmed my stupid call, though the film is phone camera and doesn't show how low they are very well, was pretty good fun, with this in mind i would have thought you could get some good shooting if they are in the area. As soon as a heard the geese i was just doing a triple note, caw caw caw, then a single note. caw. Sounds stupid and i felt it, don't have a call was just using my voice, but if anyone wants me to embarrass my self i'll upload it.
anser2
Sometimes with unshot geese you can get away with very unrealistic calls. I call geese by mouth and it sounds nothing like the real thing , but it works. I think its the pitch of the call that works rather than an exact copy of the notes. It wasnt so much your call having more pulling power, it was the fact that the geese wanted to join the rest of the skein. I take in the geese had something to feed on where they landed? demonwolf444
They landed near a maize crop but they did not go in, its already been stripped bare and the winds blown it flat they were feeding there about two months ago, then disappeared for a while now they are back on another crop on the other side of the permission. There were no geese there when i started calling, the first that came in was a group of five that split off from a bigger group, once they had landed, a few more came in, then a load of duck got off the river and came in, all the other geese they were going to another maize crop so the skien was 800 or so yards away. If i was shooting obviously they would have not been so keen, but it was good fun to just watch them. I know once there were real geese down my call was probably doing very little was just their gregarious instincts. The first ones that came in were Canada's, think there were some grey lag and then the mallard joined in. The geese ******** off after about a half hour, they were just landing on some rape that really is not coming through ( or at least i think its rape ) I might try again as it could have been fluke, i'll get through the hedge and call, that way i can film them better, the film i took just shows loads of duck and geese flying about within 20 yards of me, and long periods of hedges.
