An excellent article from the Gates Foundation on poverty. I came to this conclusion myself some time ago.

Don't read beyond this excerpt if it's not your ting...

By almost any measure, the world is better than it has ever been. People are living longer, healthier lives. Many nations that were aid recipients are now self-sufficient. You might think that such striking progress would be widely celebrated, but in fact, Melinda and I are struck by how many people think the world is getting worse. The belief that the world can’t solve extreme poverty and disease isn’t just mistaken. It is harmful. That’s why in this year’s letter we take apart some of the myths that slow down the work. The next time you hear these myths, we hope you will do the same.

There was a report carried out a couple of years ago (figures may not be correct but you will get the idea) which indicated that if the top 5% of earners in the UK contributed a one-off 20% tax we could clear UK national debt.

It will of course never happen but it illustrates how the wealth is concentrated.

I've read that before too. It also emphasises what a huge proportion of the UK's income / CG tax funds comes from so few people. So much emphasis on the rich, not enough on the lazy.
