JDog
There has been a fairly heated thread about the feeding habits of pigeons with particular reference to feeding on rape when it is cold or it is mild. As a relative novice pigeon shooter I cannot add much to what has already been said except that my best bag on winter sown rape was made at the end of April, long after spring drillings had gone in, on a warm day with the birds singing all around and some hedgerow bushes in leaf. Spring rape is an altogether different subject. No prizes for guessing that this winter has been very mild so far. I have seen today beech buds trying to break out of their cases (six weeks early), I have heard lots of bird song including chaffinch and skylark, and I saw this field of mustard just outside my village coming into flower. Perhaps a very cold snap is in order for the cold weather shooters followed by a normal spring for the rest of us. Roll on spring drillings. fenboy
All my better bags on rape have been shot after March and at times it has offered reasonable shooting right into June , when there have been plenty of pea fields about. Most of my best days on winter rape have come in March/April. I did have a great time on some really poor rape in May/June a couple of years back, killing over 400 birds in 3 visits.
