any diesel mechanics on board please, my problem, when started for first time in morning, my pajero 2.8 t/d throws out black/grey smoke and judders as if only firing on three cylinders,it does this for approx a minuet and a half, ive had very simular symtems when i was running 2.8 daihatsu fourtraks, and alway turned out to be a glow plug down, ive had the heater plugs checked/ changed oil ,and all filters, after the first minuet it starts and runs as normal, any help most welcome, atb ray

I would say its to do with the pre/post heat maybe a heater plug not up to the job but not yet failed completely.

If I rush starting my Ranger it does the same thing judders won't rev properly.

I would replace the heater plugs unless you have done already.

+1

But use good ones

Cheap ones are rubbish

Very common fault on the 2.8 Shogun and Pajero. Around 140.000 miles.

They start and run for a few min then splutter and cut out.

Then take a lot of cranking to start again but then it will be fine all day.

Then over night it draws air in again and back to square one.

It is the Injector pump front oil seal that`s gone hard and letting air in.

When the seal get`s very bad the seal lets Diesel in to the Engine oil. (NOT GOOD).

I replaced my fuel lines. Fuel filler and head unit £100. And it was still the same.

I did a load of research on Shogun & Pajero web sites. There`s loads with the same problem.

I was getting quotes of £350 to £450 for the job around Manchester.

Then i found this bloke. www.mitziheads.co.uk Look under fitting. He comes to you.

He did the job outside my house in 4 hours. All sorted £180. He is excellent top bloke.

On his web site he is now doing the front seal job for £160. All sorted outside your house.

My Shogun is fine now. It starts and goes with no spluttering or cutting out. Sorted.

UPDATE, PHONED THE GUY @ MITZIHEADS, yes it sounds like front seal gone, he came out friday started at 4.45 pm finished up working by torch light, anyway job done, next morning quite a bit exited, fired her up and, just the same, sick as a pig, rang him up and he sugested filling a container with diesel, taking the intake fuel line of and inserting a short lenghth of pipe onto the inlet and the other end into the container fire the truck up for a short time, (to eliminate pulling air) did this next morning fired her up and same again, ime at a loss what to do next, atb ray

All that is left now is the fuel lines or the fuel filter or filter head unit.

From the symptoms it sounds like it`s air in the fuel system.

Try lifting the bonnet in a morning and on top of the filter head there`s a black hand pump.

When you press it. It should be hard to press if it`s easy to press for a few pumps. There`s air in the filter.

Try a new filter smear a bit of grease around the top to help it seat and seal.

And fill the filter with fuel before fitting.

The aluminium filter head units have a reputation for warping and letting air in. Loads on Ebay.

It`s an elimination process (pain in the ar**) I would have sworn it was the pump seal.

But at least the worst one is done. Try the hand primer pump idea. And then a new filter.

Good luck.

Russ.

Also, wouldn't a glow plug issue be more of a white smoke rather than grey?

I always thought grey/black when starting was more injector nozzles worn and stuff like that?

Could try throwing a bottle of 'diesel magic' through your fuel filter (not the tank) which cleans the injectors. I did this and mine started and ran a lot better. (It's about a tenner for a bottle, but a shogun fuel filter took nearly 2 bottles to fill to the top of the filter and when you turn car on run it at about 2.5k for around a min or two so that it blasts it through the injectors and then go for a brisk drive and see what happens.

Check the draw off from the battery with engine cold ... 4 X glows functioning should register approx 48 amps ... if its mid 30's .. you are operating initially on three glows ... if you do it when cranking the engine, the amp meter will show "cranking amps" and will not show draw ... your best with passive type meter ... the type that rests on the "main" battery lead ... ideally the positive ...
