devon fowler
Hi there, just wondered if anyone had any info or dealt with similar situation I have a 22 250 rifle for foxing under a mentor condition have had so for a year and I have put in to get the condition removed. I have fired 100 rounds and I have got a covering letter etc. At the same time I have put in for a 243 variation as I have managed to get a bit of stalking what do you think they will hit me with now? mentor on the 243? dsc1 coarse ? or will my licence just appear in the post 243 variation no mentor condition?(wishful thinking)I know every department is different my dept is Devon and Cornwall. Any help as always much appreciated.
walshie
IMO if they remove your mentor condition for the 22-250, they won't impose it on a .243. Fingers crossed eh?
J_Edwards
If you've had a mentoring period with the .22-250, then that's effectively your centerfire apprenticeship completed, so imposing it on a .243 would be pointless in my opinion. If they ask you to do your DSC for the .243, then fair enough, at least it relates to deer stalking. Then again, you can't pin the police down, they could do anything. Scully
If you aren't considered experienced enough after a year and 100 rounds in the field, and/or they suggest you require DSC for .243 then you need to be contacting your shooting organisation. Personally I'd be very surprised if they imposed either after this period of time, but you never know. Good luck, and let us know the outcome. spandit
You can do a DSC1 course with your .22-250 (if you were going to do one anyway). I'm going to do one at some point before applying for a deer calibre as I only have a .223 at the moment
al4x
What makes the difference is deer you weren't shooting them before so I'd bet another mentoring or dsc is suggeted
CharlieT
D&C are very accommodating and fair, and tend to base their decisions on each individual's experience and situation. They are not great sticklers for DSC, so I would not expect them to insist on a DSC but the outcome will depend on how they view you as an individual as to whether or not they impose a mentoring condition. Those, in a similar position to yourself I have mentored in the past, have had it lifted after half a dozen stalks. It's no big deal and a jolly good way to pick someones brain and learn the basics. Look at it as a benefit not an encumbrance.
spandit
I couldn't find a mentor when I applied but have a few more contacts now
kent
On another note think about doing both jobs with one gun if pushed- they like that as the task they have "unofficially is to reduce quantity of licenced firearms". .243 and 22-250 with 55 grn bullets are near ballistic equals
devon fowler
cheers folks, you guys are a wealth of knowledge I think I will have to just wait and see time will tell. Kent, I know what you are saying if I am pushed think I will just shop the 22 for the 243 they always seem extremely keen for you to give up a firearm and at the end of the day the 243 can do everything the 22 250 can do and more. Very true, may aswell kill two birds with one stone. Sell your .22-250, and put the money from that on top of what you'd spend on the .243, then get yourself an awesome gun and scope combo
