ferguson_tom
The only advice I have given to our friends who have got married/plan on getting married is same as gambling only risk/spend as much money you can comfortably live with out. After the wedding day there is a stark realisation that you just spent 5,10,15,20k on one day and your mind then quickly starts to think what better things it could of been spent on especially if you have a mortgage!! Our wedding had over 100 people and we have a fantastic day, we could of easily blown 15-20k but kept it to around 6k (+ bar bill) mark which was helped with gifts from family members such as wedding dress from an uncle etc. We could of done it for a couple of grand less but there was a few things we wanted such as cars etc. However there was no way of telling our day was a 1/3rd of the average wedding cost. Our biggest cost saving was the food, your normally looking 40-50 quid a head but our hotel were happy for us to organise our own hog roast and they done the salads and rolls etc and for desert was the wedding cake and loads of cup cakes. came to about £15.00 a head in the end. Paul T
We did ours for well under a grand and that was at 5 weeks notice! Registry office, granted, as it was 2nd time for both of us, so that was expensive. I went to local pub and asked if they do the Sunday carvery for 60 guests and how much for the private room? They said I could have the room for nothing if I would let anyone else in the pub pay for the carvery - couldn't bite their hand off quick enough. Fed everyone with a choice of 3 meats and bottles of wine for under £500. Folk still talk now about what a good idea it was to do the pub carvery. Lass at work gets married NEXT August and bill is already up to £18k! Young lad at work gets married in a fortnight - they are both skint, living with her parents with their young kid and they've spent £12k with most of that borrowed. Absolute idiots if you ask me... smig4373
How did you manage to do all that so cheaply? Favours and stuff? Or was it a few years ago now?! sandspider
Thank you, that's interesting. And impressive! I don't see any hire charge for the reception venue - was that part of the food charge, or...?
lord_seagrave
I can highly recommend the photography services of Jonathan Cherry. He did an excellent "observational" job at our wedding. Very inconspicuous, very natural. Only a few posed photos. He caught the mood perfectly: http://www.andrewandjonathan.com/projects/simms-wedding/ LS
sandspider
Thanks LS, but I work with a lot of photographers (and my cousin is a wedding photographer) so hopefully would be able to sort something out. Nice 'tache, incidentally

Sian
I got married 23 years ago yesterday, had the big wedding, country church, country club reception - free bar etc, a week before and a few days after constant partying at my parents' house - luckily my father paid for it! The flowers alone cost my father thousands in an effort to give my mother something special as they had got married at Easter and she could not have flowers in the Church. Looking back it all went in a whirl and not sure I really got to appreciate it totally (talking about the actual day). I don't think I would have spent my own money on it. Went away on honeymoon in the following May which my grandad paid for - he gave me the £3,000 in a fruit bag at my wedding - he was a fruit and veg stall holder! Do whatever makes you both happy and enjoy.
figgy
Is it about the big flash day for everyone else or about the two of you getting married? You can do a white wedding for less than a grand even today in a church, your still married the same no matter how much its cost. It always puzzles me how much normal everyday people blow on one day, just to get wed. The wedding is the church and service, the rest is just frippery. If you have a mortgage why spend so much. brett1985
i got married in may, had the wedding and reception all in one place. venue hire was £350, meal for 60 people was £2995, reception food for 145 people was £1000, photographer was £350, hired suits for 6 men and 1 paige boy was £600, dress was £400, cake was £200. we made the bunting, table place cards, table names and holders, hessian table runners etc. all came in at less than £200 plus some man hours... flowers were £200, and bits to decorate the pergula we got married in were £85. little bits and pieces for the sweet table were about £50 gifts for those involved was about £200. that all totals £6430, so add another £500 for other bits and pieces and tally it up to £7k. the honeymoon was our biggest single expense, which including spending money came out at £5.5k. luckily, working for an Audi dealership has its benefits, mainly being 2 free brand new top of the range A8's for picking up the wife and bridesmaids. (driven by my head of business and the sales manager) it soon adds up.... but, i would have happily paid double that just seeing how beautiful my wife looked that day. worth every penny. Davyo
OMG whats going on,10,000 to 30,000 on weddings and we complain about university fees.Wife has a colleague who spent £24,000 on her day and the marrage lasted 6 weeks. She is still paying for that wedding now.I can understand if your loaded and pay it off in one go or have saved every penny. But the sad the fact is most of these extreme weddings are financed (although people will not admit).Wheres love in all this?I got married, church, reception at the local workingmens club £2.50 a head,Ford escort as wedding car(it was a ghia though).Day before was lovely sunshine, the next day 18/07/1978 it totally ****** down.Me and the best man had the wrong suits on(hired). We kicked off the day in our local boozer at 9am (landlord opened the back door for me and the bestman & the selected few) rolled out of there at 11am straight over the road into tbe church. We had a great day and I am still reminded hiw my mother had to put me in at taxi at 8.30pm and send me home. However still married and love her to bits, now I will have to go before she gets in from work as I need to get the house work done and the tea on or the **** will hit the fan. On a serious note, you can spend all the money you want, but its a commitment you make for life and money will not buy happiness, love costs nothing.Enjoy your day and to answer you last question, I would rather go to your wedding not your mates cos it will be a genuine shin dig and after the honeymoon you'll not stressed over paying for a £17k wedding. figgy
Chady I admire you and your future wife for doing it your way and keeping the money for more essential things. To many women in today's society are wanna be football wags and want the champagne fairy tail wedding on lemonade wages. More arguments are caused over money issues than anything do last thing you want to start a marriage with is a load of wedding debt. chady
To be fair to Rachel she has been given a budget and she has never questioned it once and organised the whole day around it. And excepted things that she could not have because she could not afford it. So it's Rachel's day and she has done every thing to it. Fair play to her. Chady I admire you and your future wife for doing it your way and keeping the money for more essential things.
