wildfowler.250
Has anyone got any good recipes? Was planning collecting some maybe this weekend but the few recipes I've looked at have suggested over a kilo of brambles to a bottle of whiskey which seems a lot! Cheers! kennett
Top tip, don't make it with a peaty single malt, my friend did and it was vile! Oh and a kilo won't be far off, iirc it's about a pound of sloes in a bottle of gin Edited August 30, 2014 by kennett
wildfowler.250
Thanks for the reply! The old man uses a pound of sloes to a bottle of gin as you say . Thought a kilo of brambles might be a bit much though. I don't know a huge amount about whiskey so was thinking something cheap like grouse? Thanks! wildfowler.250
Ah okay. Do they just do a big standard whiskey? Cheers!
crowdie2013
ive made quite a bit over the years and have learned no to add as much sugar as you would with sloe gin. I found it best to go with half the amount and add a wee bit if it needs. Guy on our shoot made some and it was the best Ive tasted but he just added what sugar he had and didnae no how much hed actually put in. wildfowler.250
Cheers for that! I'll go for maybe half a pound or just under for a bottle
kennett
That's the problem with making things up as you go a long, it usually turns out best but you can never copy it! I think more blackberries would be better as they are a more gentle flavour than sloes and more waterier
rich1985
Use 1 pound of fruit for every litre of whiskey and add sugar after a few weeks, I say this because if you add the sugar at the start the natural sugars in the fruit are not released as well and I find the flavour is not quite the same. Add sugar to your own taste isn't a set amount. Rich
Paul T
I'd pick a kilo and put half in whisky and half in vodka If you have haven't tried bramble vodka it is sublime
leftnright
The vodka version is good as has been mentioned, but avoid marrow brandy....like the plague, bloody grim imo
figgy
Picking brambles this week with my wife she loves bramble vodka in her hip flask in winter. Sloe whiskey is nice and bramble brandy. Figgy
njc110381
I just dropped in here to get some ideas. My mum has taken to picking blackberries when she's walking the dog and offered to get me some, so as the lazy ******* that I am, I accepted them with gratitude and came straight home to look up a recipe! I've got 1.2kg of them so I'll lob them in with a litre of whisky and see what happens. I like the idea of adding sugar to taste later. Makes sense that. How much sugar do you all use? Half the amount to sloe gin is a good point, but then I know between my mates their sloe gin varies wildly too! I go for half sugar to sloe weight myself, so should I aim for 1/4 with blackberries? Edit... Oh, a litre per pound. Best shove another 1.5l in there then. Hey ho Edited September 19, 2014 by njc110381
activeviii
Cook the blackberries off first and add the sugar. Keep adding sugar till its good but not sickly. I then add half a spoon more of sugar before adding to whiskey. Big bottle and fill with whiskey and BlackBerry until the berries are covered. Shale once a week for and start tasting after a month until your with the taste. I get someone who doesn't like whiskey to taste, once they like them its just about there. I get the us masher in as well to really get it going. I double filter to end with a bit free drink. New batch done and Charlie brown was the teat pilot on it
Anth6568
I've just made the sloe gin, wanting to make the bramble whiskey now. I do have a bottle of Grouse that I won at a clay range, would this do?
forestry
Use Scottish heather honey instead of sugar.
