aris
Lot of stuff not sold apparently . Most the stuff I saw sold within their estimated prices. We're there reserves that perhaps did not get met?
Gunman
With a lot of auctions lots not sold are "knocked down" as to appear sold as it does not look good to say not sold during a sale . Looking at the sale results and prices you can work it out . Edited September 20, 2014 by Gunman
aris
With a 25% buyers commission plus vat plus vat on the hammer price on some guns, I'm not surprised .
Gunman
Yes but you have to factor that in to the equation when bidding .
aris
Yes but you have to factor that in to the equation when bidding . I would have thought a seller would factor that into the reserve too - perhaps they are chancing their luck.
Gunman
The seller pays 15% of the hammer price . Auction houses do not like high reserves as it will discourage bidders . Auctions used to be a place you could pick up a bargain or two but not so much now . Still a place to get rid of junk and trouble though . Used to get some great deals not for a long while now public keep paying retail prices, and the last 4-5 I went to there was some real junk some of it prettied up on the outside to mess with the uninformed. Gunman
So whats the asking price ,that will be plus commission .?
jpigeon3
Went to one of their auctions in Hammersmith. Could not believe the prices , guns sold for more than the second hand value. Without the commission. Could not understand the buyers. A Browning 425 waterfowl, used in average condition went for £ 1325 + %25 commission on top. (As an example) It wasn't the only overpriced gun. All the reserves were high too. Unless you were buying a high end purdey, it just seemed crazy to me. I appreciate "buyer beware," but it's criminal to flog something that will explode at the first whiff of powder. This is particularly true if the buyer has no expertise and is looking for a bargain...
bostonmick
The only place you will find great deals and bargains is in a private sale from time to time.it's a farcical situation where a buyer has to pay a premium and then the seller pays one to.the only winner is the auction house and until people vote with their feet these jokers will continue to rip people off.I have bought land and houses as well as vehicles through auctions but never paid extra for the privilege. Wake up rip off Britain.
aris
I suspect these auctions are good for people with deep pockets who want something rare or collectable.
RossEM
I work for an Auctioneers, we have bi-annual sporting sales and people I speak to in the gun trade have mixed experiences selling through Holts. I haven't had any dealings myself so can't comment, but 25% buyers commission + VAT is very steep. Also, the fact that no condition reports are available for their Sealed Bid sales speaks volumes.
