pistolgrip
Just saw a few posted comments about lack of pigeons in South Wales, really!! I must be lucky living up in the heads of the valley area, we get some tremendous sport when the birds are on the beech mast, my favourite time of year is when they're on the wimberries, the meat tastes almost sweet, always some flying around never mind what time of year it is, never gave much thought to what the rest of the principality was like, surprised me that. JDog
There was a post last year sometime in November I think when 148,500 pigeons left the South coast of Wales to travel to North Devon and Somerset. These birds had been travelling down the country on migration.
pistolgrip
They are about, just not where a lot of people on this forum shoot, peas, wheat, rape etc because the farms around our way rear livestock, the birds feed on different diets beechmast, ivy berries, wimberries, clover, sheep feeders, blackberries and a few other things, even seen them pecking at puff balls, find these and your heading in the right direction. I have shot for many years in the vale of Glamorgan and always seemed to put a reasonable bag together, never broke the 200 bird day but quite a few 100 birds days, they are there,! just difficult to nail them down.now shoot only in Herefordshire , which on its day can be as good as anywhere , with lots of big woods and all crops from peas to borege! HDAV
I cant find them up here Or down here! Curious to know what crops are being protected
pistolgrip
Or down here! Curious to know what crops are being protected No crop protection, no crop to protect unless you count the clover, just a couple of mates plugging pigeon is that a bad thing? My crop protection is around the Brecon and Llanarth areas, when called for, all birds end up on the plate or in the ferret.
kiffy
the unfortunate thing is just plugging pigeons is a bad thing as its illegal. we are permitted to kill them to protect crops and if they are causing a specific risk to public health

You need to read up on the general liscence chap you can't just shoot them because you feel like it!
motty
You need to read up on the general liscence chap you can't just shoot them because you feel like it! In his defence, I would say that almost all pigeons in the UK will attack farmers crops at some stage of their lives. With this in mind, any pigeon shot is potentially a crop protected. kiffy
got to agree with that in one respect but i would rather not try to convince a copper or rspca inspector that i was lawfully shooting where i was if it wasnt on a farm
HDAV
Hence why I suggest he reads up on the GL it is all our interest that we all act within the law. Education of shooters is key if we are to repel additional restrictions on the sport.
pistolgrip
Shooting on ground with the land owners permission for legal quarry, but you are right I'm wrong just plugging them is the wrong phrase to use and as you stated illegal, maybe stopping pigeon shooting on livestock farms is the right way to go but I'll have to think about first. HDAV
Permission doesn't enter into it with the GL you need to read the GL it changed every year and can be updated during the year! To know quarry is legal in what circumstances unfortunately all pigeon are not legal to shoot in all circumstances. I am not saying you are shooting illegally but if you don't know the terms of the GL you cannot say you definitely are shooting them legally. Hence the surprise at the shooting you are getting in the area you are getting it!

steve w
some people are talking about the GL and having a go at the lads who shoot the odd birds for the pot ,but when somebody shoots big bags over stubble and cow manure that's ok ? stubble is not a crop and requires no protection .so in my mind carry on taking your birds for the pot and having some fun while doing it.And by the way I have had 4 or 5 good days over stubble and I was not protecting any crops just good pigeon shooting ,If we shoot them now its less to eat the rape in the winter now that's crop protection . NO. Pointing out that the GL is part of the law and everyone shooting wild birds needs to be aware of the quarry on the GL and the circumstances under which they may be shot. Seems far too many people are ignorant of the terms of the GL and put their sport above there legality.... This is where restrictions come from people notplaying by the rules. Would you also say its fine to shoot duck with lead? After all its only for the table not like anyone is going to know...
