Top Ten Children's Names

This article was printed in today's Times.

It's been published [almost verbatim] in many places but that doesn't mean the method or findings are any more accurate, after all it is an online poll carried out by a branch of a huge multinational pharmaceutical company and not a census report.

this any better for you last years when if the two derivatives of mu or mo hammed are put together as stated, it was the second most popular name for boys, this year it appears to be top.

Fair comment, but you already know the answer:

I would like to see the numbers broken down a bit and how many variants they used as there are quite a few; Mohammad, Mohammed, Muhammad, Muhammet, Hamid, Mo etc etc etc.

And if they counted other derivatives the same way would they be top? Names like Jim, James, Jamie or even J'aymeé could be seen as the same.

Hamid loosely translated means, worthy of praise, Hamed means protector, again loosely, neither are variations of Mohammad/med.

“Even though people write it differently it’s still the exact same name, The name of the Muslim Prophet means “praised” or “praiser of God”

Variations can include Mohamad, Mohamed, Mohammad, Mohammed, Muhamad, Muhamed, Muhammad, Muhammed, Muhammet and many more. .

Ok, let's fight back! 30,000 odd members of Pigeon Watch, mostly male. Should be able to sire a few kids. 50% or so should be male. Register with BabyCentre.co.uk. Now a nice name for a male child? How about Enoch?

Simply not possible. Utilising just a tiny fraction of grey matter will alert one to the reality that for Muhammad to be No. 1 newborn name in the UK the potential populace has to be at least 51% Muslim OR for the native (and European/other) sector of the population to have lost all interest in sex or be devoid of fertility. Think about it, it just isn't possible.

Then you have to have the Muslim newborns parents wanting to call their child Muhammad. Muhammad isn't even the most popular newborn name in some Muslim countries never mind anywhere in Europe.

While you make a relevant point hamster you have failed to understand the full influences. The childbearing age of all faiths is 20-35 years old; therefore making this age the focus demographic, regardless of the population makeup. Combining this factor with the evidence that Muslim parents have a far greater birth rate than western parents means it is entirely plausible that the most common birth name is Muhammad.

Where is the evidence for this ? India, China, Russia, USA, all predominantly non Muslim nations yet comfortably the most populous ! In fact some of the smaller populations in the world happen to be Muslim which considering some have been in existence for centuries does not support the rabbit breeding Muslim habit.

We need to sometimes separate fact from throw away rhetorics which sound good and help feed handy prejudice.

There are far fewer pakistani names than there are british, and a lot are very similar formats of others, eg Muhammed, Muhammad, etc. If there are less names to choose from, you will get a high proportion of a single name type.

Check the census for details of how many muslim families there are actually in the UK, a very very low proportion.

To be fair you can't really trust the census.

I put down that I was a Greek muslim.

I'm not...I just wanted to show solidarity to a third world country and 13th century religion.

It's all about the diversity innit... ;)

Christianity is a religion,Catholicism is a denomination of the Christian church.

Correct, also worth mentioning their stance (as well as Mormons) on child birth/control. Not judging here just teasing to show if the worlds forums were a fair place where arguments could be politely met with counter arguments an awful lot of rubbish would very quickly get cleared up.

In fact I'd go so far as to say if we were to live by Jesus's teachings, forums wouldn't have much need for off topic sections. ;):santa:
