marchwood
I bought a nice second-hand side-by-side 12 bore magnum (AYA No 3) with 3" chambers last year, for wildfowling. I'm too much of a traditionalist to use a semi-auto or an over-and- under! As one barrel is full choked, I can't use steel, but I'm having trouble finding a gunsmith in my area (East Anglia/Suffolk) who can sell me some bismuth magnum 3" cartridges, suitable for geese. Eley make 46g 3" bismuth cartridges in 3 shot or BB, which would be ideal. I know they're very pricey, but given the number of shots I fire, even one box would probably last me two or three seasons. Has anyone in this area bought some recently, or do they happen to know of a dealer who has some in stock? For the price of Bismuth you would be better off paying the £34-£40 it would cost to have your choke opened out and use steel where you will have a better selection of cartridges. I personally would have no issue putting steel through the gun anyway . For the price it is bismuth is not a great load anyway.

Putting 3" HP steel through a 20+ year old Side by Side with full choke is a complete no. I have the same gun and and would not put HP steel through it!! I would stick with looking for bismuth as it wont be as harsh on the gun and prevents opening the chokes out.

And that is your choice of course , as the OP is looking for bismuth he is also of that opinion , I however I would happily put steel through one myself . grahamch
you could either have the gun reprrofed for steel or get some tungsten matrix 3 inch shells, the no3s work well in my no3
Daveo26
God this is like another thread, I wouldn't put steel through it.... In fact I won't put steel through my new browning and that's only 3/4 choke Iv just bought a box of bismuth 36 gram 5s. 25 for £40. But the amount I'll use it won't really matter. Sorry can't help you find any mate!

The restriction for half choke was only suggested for larger steel pellets , if you are shooting 4s or 5s they would be fine through 3/
Daveo26
That's fair enough, if your happy using it crack on. I don't want to use steel through my gun and the op doesn't, he wants to use bismuth.

I don't want to use steel through my gun and the op doesn't, he wants to use bismuth. He never said that, he said he couldnt due to it being full choke. Fenboy made a suggestion. You seem to have the hump with people offering their opinion on steel loads based on experience

I have never seen them in a shop, only up to 36gram. I wouldn't mind a box myself. Been happy with the results with 32gram 4s Bismuth

Penelope
I do so quiet happily through a 1950's Midland Gun Co. 3" magnum with absolutely no ill effects. Daveo26
Anyone reading this will be staggered by our rapier like wit. They'll be thinking I'm not getting in on this, with these two intellectual power houses sparring. It's like a game of chess but the stakes are much higher, after all this is the inter web where complete strangers argue over irrelevant points, for no real reason other than someone doesn't share their opinion. I'm like a broken record, you're like a broken record. Let's just put it to bed, draw a line under it and agree to disagree. Kind regards Dave, I hope you have a pleasant Christmas matt, if I don't argue with you before it again.
