Suffolk has got its good points and Sunday shooting is one of them. I wish nobody ill over the festive period but, and it's a big but, if you are a fully paid up member of the atheists society, as I am, then all this months and months of Christmas being used as an excuse for nothing getting done becomes very tedious. If it was just one religious day, like Easter, it would be OK but it seems never ending. All one can find in the shops is cards, tinsel and junk. Go in and ask for a sink plug or similar and likely you will be told to come back in January. It just goes on for far too long. Old Year Night comes along - followed at midnight by New Year's Day - and that's it. One good hangover and it's done. A good, well thought out, pagan festival. Anyway, I feel in a more mellow mood today, I wish all fowlers to spend their Christmas in a peaceful and happy environment in the company of their close friends and family. Then get out there on Boxing Day, in Mother Natures back yard, and get back to what we would all rather be doing everyday - Fowling.
ayano3
Oh Ben you have mellowed. I can understand your feelings about Christmas going on too long. But things have changed over the years. I remember the only time of year we would have oranges was Christmas time. I'm sure Christmas used to start about a week before Christmas and not the middle of November. Commercialisation has had a big impact. Looking forward to our meeting Ben. ayano3
Matt. Will the land rover be traded for a nice family car soon ? I know your wildfowling career was brief but you take away many happy memories of us all. Oh and the 1 goose and the lovely shoveler. Happy Christmas mate. Once the ball and chains gone feel free to join us again 😂😁😀😆😅

The two most important days in my shooting calendar were always 1st Sept and Boxing Day , now the first don't bother me to much now but Boxing day still hold the same attraction as it did over 50 years ago . I never make family arrangements on that day , I like going wherever I feel like it , weather its pigeon shooting in the wood if its on a Sunday , walked up day with my old boss or wandering round my marshes and having a rest in between. So do most of you guys go on Boxing Day ? or is it a day with the family. All the best Robert to you and your family and keep posting your times spent amongst wildfowl either shooting or working .........Always a pleasure to read. fenboy
It is years since I have shot on boxing day , one of my friends father was a farm manager and we use to have a nice walk about for pheasant , something I miss greatly all the land I used to walk for pheasant as a youngster has been swallowed up by a shoot too so I rarely shoot a pheasant these days . I may get a flight in boxing day but that could depend on how well i celebrate xmas .

Grandalf ......Can you remember when a steamer got stuck on Scroby Sands and it had to chuck its cargo overboard to lighten it so it could be re floated , this was in December 48 and the cargo was Oranges , with it being a Eastley wind they got washed up on the beach at Yarmouth and Gorleston , not many Oranges were sold that year as all the locals had boxes of them and that was when they were a luxury . Celebrate Christmas by all means Fenboy but just put more water in it , nothing like clearing your head first thing in the morning than a good old drop of Lincolnshire fresh air straight of the North Sea , and who knows there might be a drake Pintail with your name on it ..........All the best whatever your doing and hope your Flu and sore throat is on the mend . Penelope
A very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to all on the fowling section. Not much shooting for me over the festive period other than a pheasant day of my syndicate on Sat. 27th, followed by a duck flight on the reservoirs. I have the time off from New Year's Eve until the 12th Jan. as I leave my current job on NYE and start the a new one on the 12th, so I hope to be able to get out somewhere during that time. No, I wasn't in these parts then. I was down in Berkshire by my beloved River Thames. My brother bought some bananas back from somewhere or other. He was on tankers with the Merchant Navy during the war. I was just a little nipper then but I remember I wouldn't eat them. Funny looking things...
