I'm thinking of buying my wife a 04 plate golf of a little old lady in the village...she has had it since new and was &* when she bought it..

It only got 13k on the clock and hasn't been driven for 6 years and stored under a sheet in the garage.

The only problem is it needs a replacement windscreen, tin of paint fell on it a few years back.

Can any one tell me how much I would be looking roughly at before I consider making her an offer.

Thanks as always

A relative worked for the World's biggest automotive glass company in the world, until about 3 years ago. The retail for a Golf screen was £175. The cost to staff - it had to go out at cost plus 2 1/2% - was £10.

I would be getting down to a breakers for a secondhand one.

if its bonded just buy it, insure it fully comp and a week later just claim for a screen under the glass cover, usually about £70, will not count as a claim regarding NCD

Appreciate that suggestion...

I'm sorry although the insurance companies rip us off I'm not dishonest enough to do that :) ...what goes round comes round...I truly believe this old adage !

If it hasn't moved for six years it will probably need some recomissioning, things like brakes where calipers can seize, pads can deteriorate, cables can seize, bushes and gaiters made from rubber can perish, exhausts can rot, fuel system parts persih internally, depending on what it was covered with there could be lots of condensation issues , sidewalls on the tyres cracked etc. if it's more than a Couple of hundred quid I would be very wary regardless of how many owners it had and how low the mileage is, at the end of the day it's only a golf not the classic car you have always wanted, caveat emptor

Now there's a thought..

She actually had the engine started by the gardener every week !

Seems she's not a silly as I thought.

If you want Mike I can send you a number for the windscreen fitters we use, really good guys and always a fair price. They will come to you as well.

Thanks Mate all sorted..Im going to take a dedicated VW mechanic over to have a look at it next week.

I am sure it will be an absolutely fine and a lovely little car . Won't do any harm to have a mechanic give it the once over . I bet that their are dealers on here who would buy it sight unseen . I would .
