When did bullets become so expensive?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I brought some Winchester 168grn ballistic tip .308 rounds today. They were £2 EACH!!! Is that normal?? It is a new round for me, so they may have always been top end in cost. Does it sound about right for the round, or have I been fleeced?

Cheers

most Winchester bullets are expensive try something different a few people that i know are using privi or hornady amax

I usually buy Federal 150grn, which I last remember as £24 per box. Unfortunately, my host has asked that I shoot with a min 160grn bullet, so I just got what was available. Mind you, they may prove to be an excellent round:)

China put huge demands on the worlds copper about ten years ago. Prices increased from the demand.

Iraq and Afghan wars made US government demand more from manufacturers. Civilian production dropped pushing up prices!

That's my take, get a flintlock before its too late!

Hey, I am the missing link you know!

Actually evolution has no part in it, all firearms have been created by us, men! They did not crawl out of a pond or knettle patch!

You may laugh cookie but one day, one day those words may just reverberate around in your head "get a flintlock before its to late", mwahahaha.

The bit about the US Military is the sort of thing that a dealer would tell you but its not true. The US Military makes all its own ammunition and doesn't use commercial manufacturers. The reason American ammunition is expensive is because it costs a fortune to import it now. This is why Privi is much cheaper.

Oh, maybe then. But I heard Americans also are in short supply. I was led to believe the gov had commissioned private industries or snapping up the comododities!

In fact nothing could be further from the truth. The main US Ammunition plant in Lake City Missouri is actually laying off people because they are short of work!. The plant covers a 4000 acre site and has sufficient capacity to produce enough ammunition for a major global war over a sustained period of time. They also have huge stockpiles of materials and spares etc. They are prepared for the worst.

However, it seems to be a silly story that is popular among dealers to explain why they haven't got something or why they are charging so much for it. I have heard it said several times, its laughable really.

In the US 'preppers' are buying up lots of ammunition in readiness for the collapse of the US economy which they believe is coming. Thats causing shortages.
