Disco or Shogun

Hi folks, I can't choose between two cars that I like and suits family, hobby, budget etc. They are Landrover Discovery and Mitsubishi Shogun, both 2003, 80k miles, diesel, automatic.

I had a Disco V8 15 years ago & loved it....then the baby arrived lol.

Until recently I had an L200 4work but changed this to a panel van, again I liked this too.

I'm not the most mechanically minded so what's the pros & cons? Maintenance issues, running costs etc etc etc.

Matter of personal preference really, different people will say either. I would say shogun, had Mitsubishis in the family ever since the mk1 shogun and all of them have been ultra reliable. You get the odd bad one from every car, but for reliability point of view I would say the shogun is a much safer bet than a disco.

Shogun is ok, IIRC it's the 4M/41 engine.

Watch out for rust on filler pipes going to fuel tank, in a very vulnerable position - if rusted this allows water into fuel tank which ruins the vulnerable and flipping expensive fuel pump...

Head gaskets can be an issue, easily boiled heads if you have any overheating too.

I loved mine, mind you, loved the 4X4 system.

I've had a LWB shogun and travelled it a bit - 4 years, I think the overhead bulb went - nothing else.Ultra reliable but dont neglect the cam belt.

I've heard horror stories of disco's. Faced with your choice and after a good inspection, Shogun without doubt.

A late TD5 should be a good motor especially with the low mileage and shouldn't suffer as much as other landrovers on reliability just check suspension air bags and pump etc, however I would personally go for the shogun they are considerably bigger inside and the only common fault I have heard of is the fuel pump packing up.... which is bloody expensive. My mate has a shogun which has been looked after but is similar age and been well abused regularly pulling 3.5ton IFOR with digger across fields etc and its proved very reliable.

The fuel pump tends to go because of water in diesel, only made worse by rusting fuel filler neck and lines.

Get a good example with no rust there and it should be fine.

Common issue is the filler neck on those. I replaced mine and coated them to stop them rusting. It's just that they are directly above the wheel arch exposed to all the mud and water. No big deal though, and not exactly breaking the bank to sort - it more of a warning.

Loads of room inside too. Nice feature with the built in boot seats too, makes it 7 seater when you want it.

If you are not in to repairing cars/trucks yourself is a Landrover a good idea.

I've had my 53 plate Disco for some 3 years now. Outside of servicing I've had very little to do for a car which is now 12 years old. I drive the car every day which involves 50/50 town and motorway driving.

I've changed:

1 Fuel pipe (around £40)

1 brake sensor (Around £10)

Drivers side window regulator (Less than £20)

Power steering pump (which I knew was leaking when I bought it) (£300)

Love the car, great to drive, great off road and parts readily available at very good prices.
