Hi massive I've been looking at disco 3s on tinternet and I really fancy getting one just asking about things to look for when buying one ? Are they hit and miss cos I've seen loads where they've spent quite a considerable amount of money on them are they worth bothering with or would I be better off sticking to a td5 ??? Thanks

great mpotors if you get a good one, absolute money pit if you dont. Personally I'd get a low mileage, 2004 plate (not earlier, dodgy cylinder heads) TD5, like all 11 yr old cars they have their faults but can be sorted relatively cheaply.

Of course the lanny bashers will be along to tell you to buy some jap **** that cant tow as much, carry as many people in comfort or is tail end happy

It would be TD5 all the way for me. 2 good friends of mine have both had disco 3 and both had issue's even with low mileage.

Sound advise from spanj there regards the best type of TD5 to look for.

Stick to what you know Dave.

Common faults are

Rear park brake module failure = £1200 bill had this happen to me

Air suspension compressor failure

Glow plugs are a pain to get out and are a specialised job from what I have been told as these often have to be drilled out

Make sure timing belt has been changed at around 100k and make sure transmission gearbox oil had been changed at around 70k

Good if you get s good one

Just over 4 years ago I was looking for a new car and I drove a number of 4x4's. I decided I wanted a disco, so drove a TD5 and a Disco 3 and for me the Disco 3 won hands down. The Td5 just feels too agricultural compared to the Disco 3, so I managed to find a Disco 3 at the right price.

I absolutely loved it and I must have been lucky and bought a good one. The egr valves went and were replaced under warranty and the sunroof leaked once, but that was it. I replaced it recently with a Range Rover and I love that too,

A guy I shoot with also has a disco 3, it's a 54 plate and it's only covered about 50,000 miles, but he has spent a lot on it. Why not look at one that has a lot spent already?

Think a lot of it depends on the money you got to spend. when I was talking to my mate who runs an independent land rover garage and he said better off to buy something with 100,000 miles with receipts for all the work than one at 70,000 miles. Around that mileage he said air suspension needs work and there is a big expensive service plus other faults that rear there heads around that mileage.

A lot of major work on the d3 & 4 requires the body off ! Seriously expensive in anybodys book...........

Hahaha am amazed that the lanny bashers havent been on yet............ but they will :)

Do they need to the owners are doing a good enough job

My only story revolves round a neighbour leaving the subroof open and it writing off the car....... 18k worth at that point. Landrover just couldn't sort the electrics afterwards

I've owned landies series 2,3 and defender and won't here a bad word against them, I now own an isuzu trooper as that's what my budget allowed, and I have to admit its the closest 4x4 that I've driven that comes close to the landie in terms of size, comfort, and performance. BUT and it's the coup de gras,it ain't a landie.

Also to add everyone advised me against the 55 plate RR Sport I bought, but in 1 year and 45k miles I have replaced a set of tyres (they were quite low to begin with ) at 105 quid per corner, a wheel hub @ 300 quid and the passeger door wont unlock from the central locking but will lock which I recon worst case will cost me 100 quid

this is compared to my L200 which blew its HG at 30k,6 grand engine rebuild fuel rail at 60k took them 4 weeks and 2 grand to find and fix, broke a rear leaf spring 600 quid, over 2 years of owning

and that had a service everytime the light came on at a mitsi garage
