casts_by_fly
Hi Team, I was given a good length of dried walking stick last year. For this season I am going to cut it to length and add (probably) an antler handle. I see antler chunks going here all the time so I'm not worried about that. What about the ferrule or rod to connect the two? What do you use? Just a dowel rod? Thanks rick
la bala
An old stick maker friend uses 8mm threaded bar and Areldite to join two together
panoma1
Drill a (15mm?) hole about 4.5 or 5cm deep into the soft inner core of the antler, then make a corresponding spigot on the stick to make a tight push fit, adjust the two parts together to make a nice gap free fit.......... Then fix with araldite, job done! You can, as previous posters have said use 8mm steel all thread, you will still need to drill the (15mm?) hole in the soft core of antler then glue in a dowell and drill this to take the 8mm all thread!you will then need to drill into the stick, keeping the drill straight!! You can glue buffalo horn as a spacer between the stick and antler. The diameter of the antler will need to be very close to the diameter if the stick otherwise you will have to make adjustments which can ruin the antler and the appearance of the finished stick! Oh and if you want to let in a mini compass use brass all thread! Edited May 19, 2015 by panoma1
johnphilip
Have a look on ebay, theres loads of tops you can get for sticks they are cast resin the hardest bit is drill two holes so they line up. You can do them a little over size and the areldite will fill the gaps i get my stuff from highland horn website they do some amazing stuff.or get a block of holly and make a nice thumb stick top. It can become additive

Stimo22
HiI have tried both the above methods of fixing handles and have found that the spigot method described by "panoma1" is the best, this is due to the shank not splitting where the rod can move under pressure. Good Luck
