Project idea help?

Right I would greatly appreciate any ideas people have.

 

I am going into the 3rd year of my mechanical engineering degree in September and need to decide on my individual project to complete over the year. I'm ideally looking for something which is a problem or issue that I can try and solve and also not too vast to make it impossible to do on my own in the 6-8months.

 

I'm asking for ideas here as shooting being my favourite interest at present it would make a project easier to stay motivated if on this subject.

Right-not shooting related but....brake discs work by converting friction into heat and dissipating the heat. Large discs are best but add unsprung weight to the wheels and affect handling plus their mass tends to hold heat. Imagine cutting thru a disc sideways-it would look like the letter "I"-but what if it was smaller and resembled a wavy line-the diameter could be much smaller to achieve the same surface area thus reducing weight and mass meaning greater heat loss. Pads would take slightly longer to bed in but with floating pads and modern manufacturing this would be a minor problem. As far as I know no-one has tried this but I could be wrong.

Nothing to do with rifles or ballistics at all, but a cousin designed a fully functioning but miniature lathe for his final year of training in the Royal Navy. He made the chucks, bits, wheels, everything, form scratch. It is a masterpiece in miniature and a thing of beauty and is still on display in his house. I remember being blown away on first seeing it as a teenager.

It's not an area where I have any experience, other than reading about the frustrations experienced by others, but what about doing an exercise that would alleviate or eliminate the problems associated with .17HMR ammo and the cases fracturing during the re-sizing and re-loading process?

Good idea, or even a dedicated crack tester for ammo. Don't quite know how it would work though but it would need to be quick, simple and reliable.

Probably become a millionaire overnight as well :good:

That would be a very desirable result. I'm sure if you apply structured thought that you will come up with a few ideas.

I'm afraid my prototype engineering days are over, I'm quite happy to plod along with easy stuff now. However, a dedicated crack tester would sell like hot cakes. Just think how many .17 HMR's there are about and all the reloading boys.

 

I would imagine that with all this new laser technology that something with a reflected beam off a rotating case would be relatively simple for an engineering graduate.

They didn't even have lasers on spirit levels when I messed about :lol:

I wonder if there could be an acoustic type test as well, I would imagine the coefficient of restitution would change for a cracked case and that would give a different resonance signature. Similarly there might be a different coefficient of resistivity that could perhaps be picked by a varying resistance in electrical test.

 

I agree with you about clever laser technologies, I remember having to manually work out shaft alignment calculations between motors and pumps using dial gauges, difficult sums and graph paper, now it is all done by lasers and computers.

17 HMR is a rimfire therefore as far as i know it cannot be reloaded ??

Well that would put a pin in my balloon :)

 

Although could still be a solution to be used in manufacture or maybe applicable to other cartridge types? It's not something I do, I have just read about problems that people talk about.

Thanks guys for all the suggestion. After a discussion with my professor I may be looking into the effect of particle size and combustion rate with a simulation of CFD properties through varied barrel lengths. It will be in collaboration with an ammunition a manufacturer.

In other words develop a brass stress relief process that is compatible with primed rimfire cases, thus enableing the brass to remain in a soft workable state and not work hardened and brittle and prone to cracking as it is now.
