I've got Khumo road bias 245/75 16's on my Frontera, mainly because pretty much all of my driving is on roads. You want to talk to SimonP about tyres... He's just put some new rubber on his V6 Fronty so he can use it as a plaything in gravel pits.

A lot of the low-end MT's will be remoulds, best to check before buying if it worries you. I didn't want to spend £££'s on rubber choice as I have split up sidewalls etc on sharp rocks in the past.

I only do 4,000 miles a year tops, so are lasting really well!

I've never bought remoulds or retreads before, they have probably come on a long way from their deserved dodgy reputation years ago - just don't know on that score so by default thought I would have new..

Looking into it you seem to save like £15 a corner, not sure I would risk it for that given I will do miles on the road in this thing. If it were for purely offroad then I would get them no question - only worried about speed on the motorway..

I agree about remoulds but too be honest there are so many tyre manufacturers competing for business you don't have to go too far from the mainstream to save a lot of money.

My Disco doesn't go fast enough to worry about speed ratings,

MC,

To be fair my Landie has been Sorn for 13 months, but before that i used to go Green Laneing, Gravel pitting, Salt Marsh crossing, Beach Crossing as well as do decent miles on the road

It has traversed many a LRO off road course and even small hills of Shale, gravel etc

The only reason it is SORN is due to the fact that it is a 3.5Litre V8 Petrol Engine and would cost somewhere in the region of £70 to fill up the tank for between 180-220 miles. Not the most economical, but certainly the most enjoyable :good:

Wildcat ext 225-75-R16 on my series 3, 7.50x16 Goodyear xtra-grips on my series 2a.

Wildcats are better, they're radials. Old Goodyears are xplys and noisy as hell, dangerous in the wet, touch the brakes on a roundabout and you go sideways.

I think the xplys are better off road though, especially for climbing out of ruts.

Cheers

Duster

I've got Yokohama Geolander AT's on my 110 CSW. Excellant hybrid tyres. Big nobbles for good grip off road, but quiet on road and last really well.

Got mine from www.mytyres.net, approx £65 each including delivery and cost me £20 the lot to get fitted about two and a half years ago.

SS :good:

Currently got Yokohama Geolander AT's 265/75/16 s but since mine has had a lift am seriosuly considering some 31's maybe even 33s with some wheel spacers yeehaaaaaaaa

I also have Yokohama Geolander AT on my L200. Very good tyres. I'm pleased to hear they wear well, as I was expecting them not to last very long. For the openness of the tread, they stick very well to wet roads so I assumed they had a softer compound than most. For roadholding and mud ability in one tyre, they are very good :good:

It depends a bit what they are going on, if its a refined vehicle then you really don't want mud terrains as the grip on road is not great and you get stacks of road noise from them. but if you spend most of your time off road and hardly go over 50 on the road they are fine.

For 50/50 theres only really one really good tyre and its the BFG all terrain, I've had a set on my fourtrak and now have a set of the colway copies that are re-moulds given the choice again I'd probably go for the real thing. the colways saved money but were a ****** to balance and do vibrate a bit at 70. Having said that they've been on 3 years and are only @half worn after 30K, the BFG's were good for 50K so really are good tyres for the money. OK aren't as good for hardcore off roading but then most of my permissions would tell me to go forth and multiply if I started churning up their tracks to that degree
