naddan28
to be honest if it was for work and its gonna have a tough life then there is only one brand I would consider Baikal! If you after a semi try the 153 its around the 450 mark which is a bit more than the escort but I would imagine with a rough life it will last a hell of a lot longer! njc110381
Every time I see a tired old gun that looks like it should be dead but works, it's a Baikal. I'd go for one of those instead if it was my money
peter-peter
I need to get a gun for work it will be used hard and have a rough life, I was thinking about getting a Escort semi in 26" (I want it short ish) can anyone tell me are these guns any good? you could buy a grade 7 browning for a couple of grand. or ao/u baikal for a couple of hundred the baikal will still shoot when the browning has fallen in bits

Good guns, but built on a budget. Browning, excellent guns, built properly. just my first hand opinion of the two makes.

Ballie
Well, I have to say the video of the Baikal MP-153 semi-automatic is pretty impressive, perhaps I should be looking at one of them instead of the escort. Oh and BTW I am a Beretta man (but not for a work gun) I went right of Browning’s when I bought a B25 B2G new and found it has rust all up the barrels so I got sent to the Browning importers to pick out my replacement but after finding rust in the barrels of the first 3 I picked I had my money back and bought a Beretta and have never had any trouble since. It seems I have hijacked my own post!!! This post is about a cheap gun for work.
codling99
well i use a escort,i aint had no problems apart from 65 mm carts dont cycle very well.cheap enough for work, dont exactly throw mine around, but dont exactly rap it in cotton wool either . simonww
im getting an escort this coming weekend, I've heard lots of good things about it, its reliability being one of them, theirs no doubt theirs better guns out there like the beretta but "hey"we cant all afford berretas
peter-peter
I need to get a gun for work it will be used hard and have a rough life, I was thinking about getting a Escort semi in 26" (I want it short ish) can anyone tell me are these guns any good? you could buy a grade 7 browning for a couple of grand. or ao/u baikal for a couple of hundred the baikal will still shoot when the browning has fallen in bits you wish sorry but baikals are good and well made for the money, but brownings are faultlessly reliable and i bet you any money if you shot the number of cartridges through a baikal the average clay shooters browning shoots per year, it would fall to bits. I went of brownings after having to replace firing pins, and ejectors , i shoot with a 391 teknys beretta. but on a budget a baikal cannot be beat they are indistructable. I know Ive had em for years.
caplock
I thought I was the only one Peter that went through more bottom barrel firing pins on a Browning Citori a few years back as well as the odd ejector kicker every ten thousand shots! Great guns to look at so long as you don't use 'em too much.
08shooter
i don t rate the new brownings at all.they are built to a price.i have a friend who has 18 yes 18 hand made b25s in his family.they are mostly trap guns built in the 60s and 70s now they are true brownings.guns in a different class to the 425s and 525s we get today. dunganick
brownings might pitt the bottom firing pin but it still works, they also are very prone to rust in the chambers. However this is after shooting, so may i suggest those guns you handled had been shot since they left the factory and the rust in the chambers problem is mainly an over lubrication issue. Personally ive found baikals to be equally un reliable, ejectors are a particular probelm. But i am not arguing they are a good gun for the money. just that its unfair to say brownings are rubbish. Agree that beretta 391's are great guns, couldnt go far wrong with an extrema 2, big money, but will last you a life time.
MC
I had the pleasure to shoot an Escort on saturday and apart from the stock being short you couldn't fault it. I bought a Baikal MP153 about 2 years ago and it was the biggest crock of **** going. A Baikal O/U will serve you forever, I have a mate who has had one for 20years and it has been used every season out on the marsh and it still performs faultlessly, and it has never been serviced. starlight32
Well I am going to stand in the defence of an escort, I had mine since they first come out and I have cycled in excess of 20,000 shells through it and so far had no repairs. I have stated in earlier threads regarding escorts, you seem to either get a good one or bad one. Mine cycles 24g and I have pushed 63g loads through it including High performance 3" steel, Heavy shot etc. I am not gonna knock a baikal I have an o/u as well which has give me good service for 20 years. CharlieT
I use mine for work, it spends it's life bouncing around in a tractor/Land Rover/quad, never gets cleaned and fires a fair few carts including slugs and I can't fault it. If it gets trashed and I need to replace it I will get another. Brilliant value for money. Charlie
Ballie
Right guys thanks for all your help, subject to handling one I am going to go for the Escort, 26" barrel synthetic stock model. The price of the Escort is very good and from whats been said on here they seem very realible, as the gun is only going to be thrown in the 4x4 the Escort seems the right choice. Just one qustion can you get a shotgun certificate 3 shot model converted to 5 shot FAC? I am only asking because if you can't then I will consider putting in for a variation on my fac for a 5 shot before I buy one.
