SEshooter
Give the starter motor a whack with a hammer. If it works, it's the starter motor

Duckandswing
Turn the engine off. Stick it in second gear and push it back and fore. Starter might be stuck.
Medic1281
As above, check terminals on battery and starter are tight. Also a gentle tap on the starter solenoid incase it sticking.

Saltings
had this before and it turned out to be a bad earth strap to the engine good enough to supply power for everything but not enough for the starter also could be the solenoid internal contacts spark eroding both will give you the a heavy contact noise if decent battery also check separate contact on the live terminal that supplies the dash and relays to fire everything up hope this helps
Underdog
Years ago part of service involved checking the amps drawn by a starter to ward off impending failure! Do jump of a known good batt, many a batt loses capacity when asked for high amps but will show 12v+! Next. Connect a jump lead earth polarity between batt and engine direct to eliminate heavy earth lead issue. If no change remove and clean. If a sealed unit replace. bigboodydaddy
Remove starter motor and try it on a battery with jump leads /sticking Bendix or solenoid or tooth missing on fly wheel hence drive sprocket not engaging with fly wheel if you don't get sorted give us a ring.
