Crayfish trapping

Hi guys,

I have just been talking to a colleague about Crayfish and where to trap them. Has anyone had experience of this?

A website selling the traps says about obtaining a licence from the Envoiroment Agency. That in itself shouldn't be an issue, I shoot with most of my local branch.

Are they found almost anywhere or is their a good spot to start looking?

lots of smallrivers in my area hold crayfish however beware, our own crayfish is now

protected the american signal is not.

as for cathing them put a fresh fish head in a landing net and leave it on the river bed about 15 mins if crays are there they will be in the net when you lift it out.

a good fun method is with a cane stick and a kids fishing net. best places are shallow stony river beds.

wade in and turn over flat stones with your feet. if when the mud clears and you see a cray.

put the net behind him and poke his nose with the stick.

he will hurtle backwards into the net like a bullet.

Getting a license for extraction is extremely difficult indeed. The licenses are granted if and only is there are no white claws in the river system. You will have to wait until the WC's die off before you can take signals from the water, although taking them from the water would in all likelihood stop the WC's dying out.

To summarize then, taking the signals out may help to preserce the WC's,

You cannot however remove the signals until the signals have killed off the WC's

Only then is it deemed to be allowable to extract the signals from the river system.

Yor local branch of the EA will not be able to help obtain you license, that been said if you are granted a license then the EA will tell you of the hotspots.

Well I have just ordered a couple of traps from a well known auction site and am going to try them out. I have also found a couple of nice areas of river that look like they may hold a few.

Thanks for all the advice guys

I'll let you know how I get on.

Martin, do you remember a member on here called 'Pike'?

He invited me up to Romford area to have a go at the crays. Unfortunetly, there was a bit of a heatwave and they all went suicidal :)

I made my own traps out of wire mesh and it took minutes :D
