Guest
Anyone else noticed pigeon feeding on wheat /barley fields this time of year. The crop is green and well above ground height. Have noticed it twice in the past week at different locations when OSR is available in adjacent fields.
Catamong
I think you will find that they are not actually feeding on the field, but resting up whilst they digest a crop full of rape. Cat.

Or if the field has not been sprayed this spring they could be feeding on chickweed.

Also starting to see a few in the horse paddocks.

Cat. Fully agree with Cat, today (VERY windy) I have seen flocks in grass fields, wheat, barley and on ploughed fields. Close observation with binos reveals they are just sitting there, not feeding, to keep out of the wind. It's only when windy that I see them doing this. Can you inaging how tricky it is to hold onto a brach in a 60mph gale??
Guest
These were definitely feeding and a lot of them so must be chickweed or clover then
kennett
They do also drop in plough etc to collect grit, or so I have always been told! Ready to be shot down!

It is true they do! but more likely when they are feeding on grain as they require more grit to digest.
old'un
These were definitely feeding and a lot of them so must be chickweed or clover then Not just Chickweed and Clover, pigeons eat a variety of wild plant leaves at this time of year. Strangest thing I have seen them feeding on was small black slugs, their crops full of them.
