Wingman
Now I know opinions on cold bluing vary and I also know its limitations, but I thought I would share my latest attempt at re-bluing the barrels on my Silver Kestrel sidelock. The gun was cheap and in good working condition but the barrels were quite tatty. Last weekend I sanded them down with scotchbrite pads that I had knocking about, not the ones for use on pots and pans but the "proper" ones used for paint finishing. I didnt go too mad and didnt bring it back to completely bare metal but got the main scratches and flaws out. I then degreased it with brake cleaner from toolstation and then several times with pure acetone (bought from a local hairdressers/beauty supplier for 4 quid a litre). Then heated the metal with a hot air gun and applied the bluing with a small sponge. I used Tetra Gun Blue based on reading many favorable reports from american shooters who had used it with success. Gave it quite a few coats, wiping off, rinsing with water and then degreasing with acetone each time once completed I soaked it in some light oil I had. Even if it does wear off I still have plenty left so can do the job again. I think its come out really well, I am very happy with it and it makes the gun look 100% better (little bit oily at the moment, but the finish is spot on)

jam1e
Interesting post. Looks a nice job. Do you have a before pic of the barrels? I have a Birchwood Casey Perma Blue kit I bought a while ago. I agreed to have a go at a friends 2nd semi-auto barrel as the blueing had worn off. Having said that, I haven't got around to it yet.... I tried perma blue on a previous gun and it didn't turn out any near as good as the Tetra product. I found the finish rubbed of very easily and it was quite streaky. As mentioned previously prep is the key. Sorry I didn't take a pic before as I didn't really expect it to turn out as well as it did! 14Supersport04
How much did this cost you? I might do this to my guns. Edited February 20, 2016 by 14Supersport04
Wingman
How much did this cost you? I might do this to my guns. Bought the Tetra gun blue from Uttings online less than a tenner. Acetone was about 4 pounds from a local hair and beauty supplier. The rest of the bits I had lying around but I would recommend getting some scotchbrite pads to sand down with available on eBay or Toolstation not the ones for scouring pans as there way to harsh. Oh and a can of brake cleaner which was about 3 quid from toolstation. Reckon the whole job was around 20 quid.
