They don't always do what you want them to

Following my reponse to a call on the beans in the week which turned out to be twenty doves not pigeon I used the time to scan some of our farms ready for the weekend and only found small flocks of birds either on clover in small fields or sitting in the trees contemplating eating. So we set out on Friday with no idea of what to look for , we found no birds flighting to give us a clue as to where to set up. We continued our normal spotting route and after eighty miles we had not seen a flock worth setting up for. We had seen a large flock of birds last week on two rape fields and also a clover field so we headed to view it . It had a approx one hundred and fifty birds in the trees around the rape but none on the field feeding. We watched it for twenty minutes it had birds joining the ones in the trees but not one bird on the field, it was now 14.00 so we decided to go for it and see what we get, so we built our hide on the hedge between the rape and the clover and put six stand ups on the clover and the magnet and four stand ups on the rape. After twenty minutes nothing then one bird came to the rape and was shot this had the effect of lifting all the birds from around the trees and they just spiralled up into a tighter flock and went off into the distance. We shot till 18.30 and picked up thirtyseven pigeon and one Jackdaw.

Saturday was forcast to be occasional showers so we headed in a different direction and found most of our rape devoid of birds, we had started out later at 09.00 to allow them the feed and possibly show us where they were feeding. We had covered our normal south west route when we started to come back over ground we had looked at on Friday. We watched and watched the fields but they were just flitting from one rape field to another. So as it was getting on we decided to split ,and shoot two fields and after an hour we would decide which one to shoot together, it was now 14.30 I dropped DB off and then fixed a rope banger on the field we were not shooting and then set myself up on another field . We had six decoys each and I set up with four on cradles and two on the magnet , DB went for six on cradles . After an hour DB had shot ten and me nine so we decide to stay split and see what we get. It then started to rain which continued til 18.00 we shot till 18.30 and the total for the day was me thirty seven and DB forty eight . I took a poor picture when I returned home of the eightyfive pigeon. So it had been a weekend of plenty of birds but not many that would decoy.
