sishyplops
Hi all anyone know of any issues on the mk2 ranger in regard to 5th gear, they are quite well known for problems on the later models (2006 on) but today mine am a crunching noise when shifting from 5th to 4th then was ok for about 15 miles now won't stay in 5th, everything else is fine no issues, it's a second vehicle so am toying with selling as is as just had a £650 bill on the wife's car Has anyone had problems or know what it could be ( or is interested in buying it in south Norfolk ??) Duckandswing
Sounds like you're chewing teeth on the cog. It'll likely be expensive.
jonny thomas
2nd the syncro try slowly and very deliberately changing gear as in as your driving instructor taught you all those years ago if it goes in sweet it's very likely the syncro Sorry

triumphant59
I once heard they were prone to issues with 5th gear do to the angle the gearbox sits resulting in inadequate lubrication on 5th gear. Sounds as if this is your problem. Once fixed I would use synthetic gear oil, much stickier than mineral.
rovercoupe
The 5th gear was a afterthought on old ladas and they used to go due to poor lubrication so the solution was to slightly overfill the box and not use 5th untill at a decent speed to make sure oil was being sloshed around the box. sishyplops
after speaking to my local garage and another they have said it is more than likely the bronze bush that secures 5th gear, over time they break up and then you cant get 5th, the gearbox people said they do loads, the parts are cheap enough and its about £300 for the job from them and the garage is another £200 to remove and replace after the gearbox people (Dains in Norwich) have worked their magic, so not a massive job after all, i have the truck up for sale as is as was looking to get a 7 seater 4x4, so lucky i guess for the would of bean buyer that it failed now and not when they got it home !! i would rather be straight with potential buyers than sell them something I know has an issue, if it doesn't sell, i will keep it and get it done, its been a great truck over the past 5 yrs and i will miss it if it does sell, if someone is a home mechanic it will be a bargain for them
