Hi all, My Beretta 686 ejector is about 15 years old but has only had about 4 thousand rounds through it and its been well oiled and cleaned,

A few months ago I noticed the breach lever was back to almost straight and it was really getting tight to open, I took it to a local gunsmith who says he stripped it, ground off the locking pins and freed off the mechanism for which he charged me £87.

After only 2 hours out on the pigeons it started locking up again and now its so tight it takes 2 hands to open it, I went in today to complain and he reckons it needs a 'pin kit' which he is now pricing but didnt seem to have much idea why it jams .

I have been told by a member at the local clay range that this is a problem with Beretta and it will be wear on the shaft that pulls back the locking pins.

Any advice ,is there a repair kit I could fit myself, I do have a reasonably good engineering background,

I have overcome the problem as a temporary fix by putting small bungs in the bottom of the locking pin holes which stops the pins going all the way in, it still closes firmly and is quite safe but it was an expensive gun and I would like to keep it in good order. thanks all in anticipation. :good::good:

I'd make 2 suggestions: 1) Don't listen to range gossip. The 68x series guns are immensely reliable and the locking system hardly ever gives any trouble. 2) Go and find a proper gunsmith who will fit a new locking 'U' bolt and check the alignment and condition of the locking holes and make good if needed.

At 4,000 rounds it's barely run-in. For a 686 that's about the equivalent of 4,000 miles on Volswagen Golf!

My 682 gold e ( basically the same action) is 14 years old and has shot 150 cartridges a week for its entire life. Over 100,000 shots. Its never needed tightening or any parts but once a year I strip it down and grease the top lever spindle as they do get tight.

And another thing is I never oil it only ever use grease.
